MAX PUGATSKY, EYMIAN NILKENFELD, AND SAMUEL LIANNES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASY-FASTENER.
all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MAX PUGATSKY and Emma W'ILKENFELD, both citizens of the United States, and SAMUEL MANNES, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, all residents of New York city, New York, have invented an Improvement in Clasp Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates to a clasp fastener, and the object thereof is the provision of an article of the class to which this invention relates, in which the catch member when disengaged from the latch member, will be positively separated or ejected the one from the other.
The snap fastener designed in accordance with our invention is particularly adapted to close the mouth of a pocket in a garment in order to lock the same and to so convert an ordinary pocket into a safety pocket, but it will be manifest that the article may be applied to other obvious uses without departing from the nature and spirit of our invention.
In carrying out our invention, the improved clasp fastener preferably comprises a catch member, a latch member adapted to be engaged by the said catch member, means for normally maintaining said catch or latch members in engagement with one an other, and means operative upon the disengagement of the said members for positively separating the catch member from the latch member, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal cross section of a clasp fastener embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar section through the catch member showing the same as removed from the latch member. .Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the member shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a view of the latch member similar to that shown in Fig. l but with the catch member separated therefrom, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 00, m, Fig. 1, all the figures being on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawing, our improved clasp fastener preferably comprises a catch member consisting of a plate made of metal or any other suitable material in which in the required position, a catch 11 is secured. This catch 11 in one face thereof is provided with a recess 12 and in the opposite face thereof and at its extremity the catch 11 is provided with a cut-away Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1909.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909. Serial No. 478,031.
Vithin the casing 64 we employ a latch 16, the outer face 17 of which is beveled and adapted to contact with and slide against the beveled face 14 on the catch 11. The latch 16 is provided with a pin or shank 18 surrounding which and extending between the latch 16 and the adjacent end of the casing, there is a helical spring 19 adapted to normally maintain the latch 16 against a stop 20 provided therefor on the plate 15 within the casing a.
Secured to the latch 16 in any suitable manner and passing through one end of the casing a, is a cord, string, wire or other device indicated at 21 and by means of which the latch 16 may be moved longitudinally within the casing 64 against the action of the spring 19. At the opposite end of the casing and within the same, we provide a fiat spring 22 or other equivalent means adapted to engage the cut-away portions 18 in the catch 11 when the same is inserted through the aperture 6 in the said casing and engaged by the latch 16, the nose 27 of which as will be understood, passes into the recess 12 in the catch member and holds the parts in a closed or locked relationship. Now as will be manifest, upon withdrawing the latch 16 from this locked position by means of the string 21, the spring 22 will become operative to positively eject the catch 11 from the aperture 6 in the casing a and so separate the catch 11 and the plate 10 associated therewith from the associated parts of the latch member.
In the drawing we have illustrated the catch member as provided with apertures 23 and 2 1, by means of which the same may be suitably connected to the cloth or garment or other article and for the same purpose and in similar positions, he latch member is illustrated as being provided with apertures 25 and 26. Any means however may be employed to secure the members of the clasp to the parts of a device to be locked together, without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
We claim as our invention:
1; In a fastener of the class described, a plate, a catch secured in the said plate and provided with a recess in one side thereof and a notch at the extremity of the other side thereof, a casing having an aperture therein adapted to receive the said catch, a latch within the said casing and provided with a projection adapted to enter the said recess in the said catch, a spring bearing at one end against the said latch and at the other end against the said casing and adapted to maintain the said latch in position, means secured in the said latch and passing through a portion of the said casing and by which the said latch may be moved against the action of the said spring and a second spring secured within the said casing and adapted to bear against the surface of the said notch in the said catch to positively separate the same from the said latch when the said projection of the latter is withdrawn from the recess in the catch.
2 In a fastener of the class described, a plate, a catch secured in the said plate and provided with a recess in one side thereof and a notch at the extremity of the other side thereof, a casing having an aperture therein adapted to receive the said catch, a latch within the said casing and provided with a nose adapted to enter the said recess in the said catch, a spring bearing at one end against the said latch and at the other against the end of the said casing and adapted to maintain the said latch in position, a string secured to the said latch passing through the end of the casing and by which the said latch may be moved against the action of the said spring, and asecond spring secured at one end within the said casing and adapted to bear at the other end against the surface of the said notch in the said catch to positively separate the same from the latch when the nose of the latch is withdrawn from the recess in the catch.
Signed by us this 5th day of February, 1909.
