R. C. FRITZ ET AL FASTENER -Filed Feb. 27. 1925 Patented Nov. 18, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
RENO C. FRITZ AND CARL E. ENGLAND, 0? RED WING, MINNESOTA.
FASTENER.
Application filed February 27, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, RENO C. Farrz and CARL E. ENGLAND, citizens of the United States, residing at Red lVing, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its object the provision of a snap fastener comprising compleinental parts, the one embodying a socket and a catch and the other including a tongue adapted to enter the socket and engage the catch, whereby the parts are securely held until the catch is actuated by pressure of the finger which releases the parts and admits of their separation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of the application:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a fastening embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional detail of the pocket member, the dotted lines showing the catch depressed to releasing position,
Figure 8 is a side view of the tongue member, and
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the fastener.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designat ed in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The fastener comprises complemental members 1 and 2, the member 1 embodying Serial No. 621,592.
a socket within which is disposed a spring catch 3 and the member 2 embodying a tongue a having a notch 5 and beveled end 6. The catch 3 includes a lateral extension 7 which is adapted to engage the notch 5 and secure the members 1 and 2 when coupled. A pressure piece 8 has connection with the catch 3 and passes loosely through an opening in a side of the socket, the projecting end being adapted to be engaged by a digit of the hand, whereby to efiect disengagement of the catch 3 from the tongue a to admit of separation of the parts 1 and 2.
Disposed within the member 1 and secured to the bottom wall thereof is a stop 8. The stop 8 regulates the distance that the member 2 may be inserted into the member 1 and thereby assure correct engagement of the lateral extension 7 with the notch 5 in the tongue 4.
The members 1 and 2 may be of any construction and relative size, depending upon the particular use of the fastening, and any means may be resorted to for attaching the parts of the fastening to the article to which the fastening is to be applied. The fastening may be applied to articles of personal wear or to such articles as harness, trunks, packing cases, curtains and the like to which fastenings are generally applied for securing the parts to be connected. It is also observed that the fastening may be constructed of any suitable material and in the form shown lateral ears 9 are provided for con venience of attaching the parts of the fastening to sundry articles.
lVhat is claimed is:
A fastener of the class described consisting of a socket, a spring catch within said socket fastened to one wall thereof, said catch having a pressure piece extending through the opposite wall of the socket, the forward end of the catch having a lateral extension facing the last mentioned wall, astop within the socket on the first mentioned wall intermediate said extension and the entrance end of the socket, a complemental fastening member cut away inwardly of a side thereof to provide a tongue and a shoulder, said shoulder being engageable With said stop, said stop being located inwardly a distance from said entrance end,
a recess extending inwardly to engage and retain the extension. 7
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
whereby the oomplemental member may be RENO C. FRITZ. snugly received for a portion of its length CARL E. ENGLAND. in the socket, the forward end of the tongue Witnesses:
being beveled to depress the said extension PLATO E. SARGENT,
l and catch member, and said tongue having a O. M. ANDERSON.
