separable fasteners are used on wearing apparel and it is very desirable to provide a fastener which is small and which will preventthe elements from being separated unintentionally and allow the garment to open up. For the purpose of providing the foregoing advantages in the present invention, the slider is provided with a one piece, spring actuated locking element, which extends longitudinally of the slider, and lies relatively close to the body portion, so as to provide a relatively thin construction. The locking element being made in one piece it, is relatively easy to assemble and economical to manufacture.
The foregoingobjects and other features of the invention will be more clearly understood by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing the slider Ill, embodying this invention, is illustrated in connection with aseparable fastener I I, having a series of fastener, elements .|2 which are i? adapted to be interlocked with one another and spread apart by the slider I0. Referring to Fig. 3, the slider ||l comprises a pair of wings |.3, which are adapted to slide over the fastener elements I2, and cause them to be interlocked by the curved 5 flanges I4, which cooperate with the elements |2 in the usual manner when the slider is pulled in an upward direction as viewed in Fig. 1. The wings I 3 are connected at the frontend of the slider by a spreader element I5 which is interposed between the individual strings I6 of the fastener elements when the slider is assembled therewith. A one piece spring locking element l'l extends longitudinally of the slider Ill, and one of its ends is secured to the front end I8 of the slider III. The other end of the locking element I1 is provided with an inwardly bent portion provided with a head I9, which extends through an opening 20 in the upper wing I3. The head I9 is provided with a projection 2| which is adapted to extend between the fastener elements I2 and thereby lock the slider I against unintentional movement in the rearward or opening direction. The locking head I9 is wider than the width of the opening 20 and is provided with shoulders 22 which overlap thelongitudinal edges 23 of the opening 20. The head I9 is connected to the element IT by a neck or reduced portion 24 having shoulders 25. p
Referring to Fig. 4, the slider I0 and locking I element I1 is operated by a pull element 25 having an opening 21 therein and through which the element II extends. The mid portion 28 of the element I! is spaced from the upper wing I3 and the end of the pull 2!; is adapted to slide in this space. In order to assemble the pull element 26 and the locking element I! on the slider I0, the element I1 is extended through the opening 21 and the locking head I9 is extended through the opening 20 while theelement I1 is arranged at an angle to the lengthwise direction of the slider. After the shoulders 22 pass through the opening 20, the element I1 is turned so that it is aligned longitudinally with the slider III. The inwardly bent front end 29 of the locking element I1 is provided with a reduced portion 30 which fits in a groove 3| (Fig. 3) formed in the spreader I on .the front of the slider I0. When the groove 3| is formed, the edges 32 thereof extend outwardly, and after the reduced portion 30 is positioned in the groove 3|, theedges 32 of the groove are beaded over the portion 30 to retain the end of the element I l in a fixed position. The shoulders 3| at the ends of the reduced portion 30 bear against the beaded over edges 32.
The front end of the element I'I being held in a fixed position the locking projection 2| is normal- 1y resiliently positioned between the fastener elements' l2. The shoulders 25 are adapted to engage the top surface of the wing l3 to prevent the head I9 from being pushed down too far, and the shoulders 22 are adapted to engage the beveled edges 33 of the opening 20 to prevent the head I9 from being pulled through the opening. The edges 33 are beveled to provide a greater space for the head IS without increasing the thickness of the slider to the end that more metal can be put in the head to increase its strength.
The locking projection 2| is provided with. a beveled edge 33 which permits the projections 2| to slide over the elements when the pull 2' is moved in a forward direction to move the slider and close the fastener. The rear portion of the locking element fl is provided with an inclined portion 35 against which the end of the pull 26 may be wedged when it is moved in a rearward direction to separate the fastener elements l2. The locking projection 2! is moved upwardly out of engagement with the fastener elements l2 by 15 mitted by the prior art and to the extent covered by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A slider for a separable fastener comprising two wings and a spreader member interposed at their front ends, said wings and spreader being adapted to slide in contact with the fastener elements to engage and disengage same, a lock for said slider comprising a leaf spring element extending lengthwise of said wings and secured at one end to the front end of said slider, said spring having a mid portion which is spaced from the wing adjacent thereto and a rear end portion which is bent inwardly towards said wing, said inwardly bent portion having a locking head which is provided with a shoulder at the side edge thereof, said wing having an opening in its rear portion, said head and shoulder extending through said opening, and said shoulder overhanging the edge of said opening to prevent the removal of the locking head from said opening after the opposite end of said spring has been secured in place, said head havinga projection thereon which is adapted to be resiliently held 3, by the spring between the fastener elements to prevent the movement of the slider in the direction to disengage the fastener elements, and a pull member adapted to operate said slider and move said locking projection out of locking en- !5 gagement with the fastener elements.
2. A slider for a separable fastener comprising two wings and a spreader member interposed at their front ends, said wings and spreader being adapted'to slide in contact with the fastener elements to engage and disengage same, a lock for said slider comprising a leaf spring element extending lengthwise of said wings said spring having its front end notched out and bent over the front end of said wings, said notched out portion 5 fitting into a groove in the front end of said slider and secured therein by heading the edgesof the groove over the notched out portion, said spring having a mid portion which is spaced from the wing adjacent there'toand a rear end portion which is bent inwardly towards said wing, said inwardly bent portion having a locking head which is provided with a shoulder at the side edge thereof, said wing having an opening in its rear portion, through said'opening and saidshoulder overhanging the edge of said opening to prevent the removal of the locking head from said opening after the opposite end of said spring has been secured in place, said head having a projection thereon which is adapted to be resiliently held by the spring between the fastener elements to prevent the movement of the slider in the direction to disengage the fastener elements, and a pull member adapted to operate said slider and move said locking projection out of locking engagement'with the fastener elements.
3. A slider for a separable fastener comprising I two wings and a spreader 'member interposed said head and shoulder extending at their front ends, said wings and spreader being adapted to slide in contact with the fastener elements to engage and disengage same, a lock for said slider comprising a leaf spring element extending lengthwise of said wings and secured at one end to the frontend of said slider, said spring having a mid portion which is spaced from the wing adjacent thereto and a rear end portion which is bent inwardly towards said wing, saidinwardly bent portion having a locking head which is provided witha shoulder at the side edge thereof, said wing having an opening in its rear portion, said head, and shoulder extending through said opening and'said shoulder overhanging the edge of said opening to prevent the removal of the locking head from said opening c after the opposite end of said spring has been secured in place, said head having a projection thereon which is adapted to be resiliently held by the spring between the fastener elements to prevent the movement of the slider in the direction to disengage the fastener elements, the edge GILMAN M.
