3 Claims.
My invention relates to slide fasteners and particularly to improved means for locking the slider in the desired position on the rows of fastener elements.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved locking slider which will be automatically operative without any attention Whatever from the user; which will be neat in appearance and practically fool-proof in operation; and which will be adaptable to certain known types of slider, particularly those having a loop fixed thereto to make a connection for the pull tab.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is a general plan view of a slide fastene equipped with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1; 1
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on lline 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4is a cross-section on line'I-l of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the slider body and locking member respectively.
The fastener illustrated comprises a pair o flexible supports, herein fabric tapes 8, having.
attached thereto cooperating rows of fastener elements 9. The particular form of the fastener elements is no part of the present invention, the one illustrated being similar to a well-known type on the market, more fully described in Sundback Patent 1,219,881. It will be` sulcient here to say that the fastener elements are uniformly spaced and the `locking means hereinafter described, enters into the spaces between the fastener elements. 'I'he fastener 9 is opened and closed in a well-known manner by means of a slider comprising a channeled body member I0 having an elongated loop II nxed thereto on its upper surface. The slider body is piercedA under the loop at the front end to provide an opening I2, and is preferably provided with a suitable depression I3 under the loop at the rear end.
The locking member comprises an elongated bar I4 arranged under the loop Il and having a rear end I5 bent downwardly so that the lug I6 engages in the depression I3 to hold the locking member in position under the loop. At the other end the locking member is bent down and is provided with one or more locking prongs I1 offset from the longitudinal center line of the slider to be engaged in the spaces between the fastener elements 9. A fiat spring member I8 is fixed to the top of the locking member and preferably is formed by simply stamping out the mid-section of the locking bar and bending it up in the manner shown. When the locking member is inserted in position the :dat spring I8 will bear against the under surface of the loop Il and tend to press the locking prong I I downwardly into engagement with the fastener elements. The locking prong has a beveled end I9 so that when the .slider is moved upwardly as viewed in Fig. 1, the locking member will automatically ride over the fastener elements. A pull tab 20 has a connecting loop 2| engaged around the loop II and locking bar. When thev pull tab is pulled downwardly as in opening the fastener, it will automatically lift the locking bar out of engagement with the fastener elements and permit easy movement without any attention from the operator.
,While I have in this application specifically shown and described one embodiment whichv my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this .embodiment is merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other formsgmay be devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the following claims. v
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A slider for separable fasteners of the type having a pair of stringers provided with interlocking elements, comprising parallel wings, a loop extending upwardly from the surface of one wing and a locking. member mounted under said loop `comprising an elongated bar extending along the under surface of said loop, the slider wing having a depression at one end of the loop and an opening at the other end of the loop, the locking bar at one end having a projection extending into said depression to prevent the locking bar from shifting laterally from lts place under said loop, said locking bar at the other end having a prong extending through the opening in the wing and movable into and out of locking engagement with the interlocking elements of a fastener Stringer.
2. A slider for separable fasteners of the type having interlocking fastener elements comprising a channeled body member having parallel wings, an elongated loop on one of said wings and a locking bar separate from and mounted under said loop, means for retaining said locking bar in position under said loop, said locking bar having a locking prong at one end movable into and out of engagement with the fastener elements, and a spring acting between the under surface of said loopb and said locking bar for automatically moving said locking bar into engagement with the fastener elements, and a pull member connected to said loop and having a connection also with said locking bar for releasing the same from locking position.
3. A slider for separable fasteners of the type having interlocking fastener elements comprising la channeled body member having parallel wings, an elongated loop on one of said wings and a locking bar separate from and mounted under said loop, means for retaining said locking bar in position under said loop. said locking bar having a locking prong at one end movable into and out of engagement with the fastener elements, and a spring acting between the under surface of said loop and said locking bar for automatically moving said locking bar into engagement with the fastener elements, said spring comprising a tongue connected at one end to said locking bar and extending along the under surface of said loop, anda pull member connected to said loop and having a connection also with said locking bar for releasing the same from locking position.
