This invention relates to separable fasteners employing stringers adapted to be coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers, and particularly to an improved end stop construction for devices of this class which will facilitate the attachment of the stringers to their supports, and the proper assemblage of the fastener stringers one with respect to the other; and the object of the invention is to provide an l0 end stop in the form of a double channelled body into the separate channels of which the stringer tapes are adapted to be attached and secured, and especially wherein said body is of such cross sectional form as to enter the channel in the contracted end of the slider in the limited movement ofthe slider in the direction of saidrstop, with means on the stop for limiting the movement of said slider thereon; a further object being to provide a stop of the class described, one side channelled portion of which may be normally left open for receivingvan opposed Stringer inthe operation of coupling the stringers together,.the f.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms' a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by-suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

perienced in the attachment of the stringers toV y various supports, such for example as in-mounting the stringers in connection with pocketbooks,
on trousers, and in other uses, especially from the standpoint of attaching the stringers and maintaining proper alinement and arrangement thereof. It is the purpose of my invention to provide a means of constructing these stringers and assembling the same so as to provide for the independent attachment of the Stringer tapes to the respective supports and to provide a simple and practical means for coupling the stringers together and to maintain and assure proper alinei ment thereof. as will later appear.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have shown for the purpose of illustrating one method of carrying `my invention into eiect, parts of two supports I and 8 to which the Stringer tapes 9 and III are` secured. Each Stringer tape has, preferably, a beaded edge to which the coupling links -or vscoops II and I2 are attached. These scoops may 1 be yformed and rmounted in any desired manner, prevent movement of the stop on said tape in.y one direction; and with these and other objects;

'At I3 andl I4 AIhave shown on each Stringer one of the end stops which limit the movement of a slider I5 .in one direction on the stringers. Theslider `consists of the usual channelled body having the contracted end portion I5a and the ared end portion I5b. The latter end portion has a V-shaped connecting web I5cwhich joins the top and bottom plates of the slider. One plate of the slider is provided with a member I6 provid' ing means for supporting a nger piece 4or pull I1, part of which is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Y
In Figs. l to 4 inclusive, I have shown at I@ one of my improved end stops which consists of a body portion having channels I9 and 20 at the side portions thereof and arranged longitudinally of said side portions. The channels I9 and 2l) open outward through the sides of the body and forni jaw members l wherethe channel IQ is arranged and jaw members 22 where the channel 20 is arranged. These jaw members normally are widely separated, as indicated at the left of Fig. 3 of the drawing, when the device I8 is made so as to facilitate free insertion of the stringers 9 and III, as will be apparent. The adjacent faces of the jaw members 2| and 22 are provided with longitudinally spaced teeth or projections 21a, 22a which are adapted to extend into the braid of the stringer tapes 9 and I0 in securing the device I8 thereon.
The inner ends of the channels I9 and 20 are preferably flared to facilitate free insertion of the beaded edges of the stringer tapes 9 and I 0. One of these flared ends is indicated at 23 in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The other outer end of the end stop device I8 is provided with an outwardly projecting stop flange 24 which limits the movement of the slider I5 on the stringers and on the device I6. It is understood that the cross sectional contour of the device I8 forwardly of the flange 24 is such as to enter the contracted end I5a of the slider I5 as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It will thus be seen that said contracted end of the slider engages the flange 24 in limiting the movement of the slider on said end stop.
In the use of the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be understood that after the stringers have been formed with the links II, I2 thereon and the end stops I3 and I4 attached, the slider is then mounted upon one of the stringers, for example, the stringer I as shown. after which the stringers are attached or coupled together by the slider. When so coupled, the stop 24 is arranged on both stringer tapes so as to bring the inner end of the stop I8 in engagement with the end link Ila of the Stringer 9. The channel portion I9 of the end stop may then be firmly compressed upon the tape I0 in the manner shown, so as to retain said stop against displacement from said tape. However, the other side having the channel 20, is left in its open position. The assembled fastener will now be suitably alined on the respective parts 1 and 9 to which the stringers 9 and I0 are to be attached. 'I'he tapes may be temporarily attached thereto in any desired manner after which the fasteners are separated by moving Lthe slider I into the position shown in Fig. 2,
and then drawing thestringer 9 through the slider and the open channel' 2U of the stop It. The separate stringers 9 and I0 may then be stitched or otherwise secured to the support 1 and l, as is indicated at 25, 25a. Then the stringers may be reassembled by threading the end 9a of the Stringer tape 9 through the slider I5 when in a position similar to that shown in Fig. '2 and into the channel 20, after which the stringers 'are coupled together, and thenthe jaws 22 are compressed onto the tape 9 to secure the stop I8 thereto to produce the result illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Any suitable tool or tools are used for this purpose. Aside from any other ilnishings that may be necessary in the different uses or assemblages of thestringer tapes, the device is now ready for` struction, one wall of the stop I8 is provided with an aperture 29 which opens into the channel 21. Pivotally supported in the aperture 29 is a pawl 30 arranged upon a pin 3l transversing the aperture 29. A spring 32 is seated in the aperture and cooperates with the pawl 30 to normally project the pointed end 30a thereof downwardly .into the channel, which movement of the pawl is restricted by a projection 33 on said pawl. The stop I8a also has the end flanges 24a similar to the anges 24. With this type of construction the end stop I8a will be permanently attached to one Stringer tape 34 which is arranged in the channel 26 thereof as indicated in Fig. 5, Whereas the other Stringer tape 35 will be slidable through the channel 21 from the right toward the left as viewed in Figs. 5 and 6 in the operation of coupling the same therewith. In this operation the stringer 35 or the beaded edge 35a thereof will automatically raise the pawl 30 against the action of the spring 32. However, when the stop I8a reaches the end link 36 on the Stringer 35, continuation of this sliding movement through the channel 21 is prevented' by engagement between the stop and the end link, and the pawl 30 will prevent movement in the reverse direction, since the pawl 30 or the pointed end 30a thereof will dig into the tape and secure or retain the stop I8a against outward movement thereon.
This construction will eliminate the necessity of using any kind or class of tools in making the attachment and may iind its usefulness in the cases where the complete fastener is sold as a unit for individual use in what might be termed the retail sale of devices of the kind under consideration. It will also appear that a novel method is provided for the attachment of fastener stringers to their respective supports which will greatly facilitate and simplify the manufacturers problems of attaching fastener stringers to their respective supports.
It will be understood that my improved end stop may be composed of a die cast body which will be made in the form of a metallic casting when the remainder of the fastener is of similar construction, but it will be made of thermoplastic material when the remainder of the device is constructed of such material.
It will also be apparent that my invention is not limited to any particular type of stop used at the ends of the Stringer to which the present stops I3 and I4 are secured. It will also be understood that the top and bottom surfaces of the walls of the end stop I8, I8a may be characterized to give 'ornamental appearance thereto, or in applying trade marks or other markings thereon.l v
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An end stop forming devices for separable fasteners of the class described employing Stringer tapes with coupling links on said tapes, a slider movable longitudinally of said tapes to couple and uncouple said links and having means at one end of said tapes to limit the movement of the slider in one direction on the tapes, said device comprising a double-channelled body, one tape being permanently secured in one of said channels retaining the slider against displacement from said tape, transversely arranged tooth means in the other of said -channels whereby the other of said tapes may be inserted therethrough and retained against subsequent displacement therefrom, and said end stop having a substantially peripheral slider engaging flange at the end thereof farthest removed from said links.
2. An end stop forming devices for separable fasteners of the class described employing Stringer tapes with coupling links on said tapes, a slider movable longitudinally of said tapes to couple and uncouple saidlinks and having means at one end of said tapes to limit the movement of the slider in one direction on the tapes, said device comprising a double-channelled body, yone tape being permanently secured in one of said channels retaining the slider against displacement from said tape, means in the other of said channels whereby the other of said tapes may be inserted therethrough and retained against subsequent displacement therefrom, said means comprising spaced jaw members compressible onto said tape, and opposed surfaces of said jaw members having transverse teeth longitudinally arranged thereon.
3. An end stop forming devices for separable fasteners of the class described employing Stringer tapes with coupling links on said tapes, av slider movable longitudinally of said tapes to couple and uncouple said links and having means at one end of said tapes to limit the movement of the slider in one direction on the tapes, said device comprising a double-channelled body, one tape being'permanently secured in one of said channels retaining the slider against displacement from said tape, means in the other of said channels whereby .the other of said tape may be inserted therethrough and automatically retained against subsequent displacement therefrom, said last named means comprising a toothlike prong pivotally arranged in said end stop and tensionally projected into said channel.
4. As an article of manufacture a single Stringer of a separable fastener of the-class described, said stringer comprising a tape having coupling links arranged at spaced intervals along one edge thereof, an end stop permanently secured adjacent the end links and a slider loosely supported by said links and retained thereon 'by said end stop, said end stop extending beyond the coupling portion of said links,'a channel in the extending portion of said end stop substantially parallel to the edge of the tape, said channel opening through the ends and the projecting sidevof said end stop, and spring actuated detent means in said channel whereby the edge of a second Stringer may be inserted therein and automatically retained against subsequent removal therefrom.
