REMOVABLE TOP STOP Filed May 2, 1945 INVENTOR 24 VA? Mae/MSW Patented May 10, 1949 2,469,509 amovanm 'ror s'ror Davis Marinsky, Bronx, N. Y.: Louis B. Morin executor of said Davis Marlnsky, deceased, assignor of one-half to said Louis B. Morin Application May 2, 1945, Serial No. 591,514
1. 20 Claims. This invention relates to separable fastener stringers. More particularly, the invention deals with a removable top stop comprising a yoke like member adapted'for attachment to a predetermined number of end scoops at one end of a stringer in forming substantially within the boundaries of the scoops a means blocking end scoops from coupling engagement, thus checking.
movement of a conventional slider in the direction of said end of the stringers. Still more particularly, the invention includes a top stop. device having means thereon preventing displacement of a slider from a single stringer as and when the stringers are completely separated. The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed, and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of one end portion of the 2 stringers. On the other hand, the degree of this movement can be determined by the location or arrangement of the top stop on the scoops or by the number of scoops engaged thereby.
In illustrating one adaptation and use of the invention, I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 at N a part of a stringer tape upon the beaded edge stringer of a separable fastener illustrating a top stop mounted on end scoops of the stringer.
Fig. 2 is a front edge view of the structure as seen in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, diagrammatically illustrating the manner of attaching the yoke to end scoops in forming the top stop.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a top stop yoke, detached.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing a modified form of device; and
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Figs. 4 and 5, show-' ing another modification.
In separable fasteners of the class defined, there are times when it is desirable to remove top stops from the stringers. In most instances, these tops have been directly applied to the stringer tapes, and removal of the stops results in damage to the tape.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a top stop which is directly applied to the coupling end portions of two or more scoops and is in the form of a simple yoke shaped body which can be easily applied to the scoops and also easily removed therefrom. Attachment and detachment of the stop to the scoops in no way will mar or injure the tape. Furthermore, I provide a top stop device which is substantially contained within the boundaries of side surfaces .of the scoops so that the stop can enter the channels of the conventional slider and thereby permit movement of the slider to the extreme end of the ll of which is secured, at longitudinally spaced intervals, a plurality of scoops l2. The scoops are generally of the coreless V-shaped cross sectional form, illustrated in the. application of Louis H. Morin on Scoops for separable fastener stringers Ser. No. 531,618 filed April 18, 1944, being modified solely by employing wing like male coupling end portions, l3 which converge in the direction of the ends it and [5 thereof instead of having substantially parallel walls, as illustrated in the application in question. The re-" cessed or female coupling portions [6 of the scoops are recessed at their sides, as seen at I] and l8,v note Fig. 3. The ends I and 15 are, however, substantially inalinement with the sidesurfaces l9 and 20 of the mounting end portion 2| ofthe:
SCOOPS.
My invention is not particularly concernedwith- I the specific structure of the scoops except insofar as their adaptation for use in connection with my improved top stop yokes, one of which is shown at 22, note Figs. 1, 2 and 4 of the drawing. The
yoke 22 may also be defined as an elongated rin and comprises upper and lower members 23 and 24 joined by side members 25 and 26.
In originally forming the top stop yoke 22, the
upper and lower members 23 and 24 are bent centrally to a slight extent, thus disposing the sides 25 and 26 angularly to each other, and this normal position of the top stop blank is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In this position, the opening between the side wall members 25 and 26 is sufiicient to provide free passage of the top stop over the ends it and I5 of the scoops.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing I have diagrammatically illustrated a manner of attaching the top stop 22 to end scoops l2 of astringer, which consists in moving two tools or jaw members 29 and 30 into engagement with the side members 25,
and 26 of the top stop, and then toward each other to move the members 25 and 26 into the recesses l1 and I8 by increasing'the bend, as at 21. The members 25 and 26 entering the recesses I1 and I8 will permanently retain the top stop 22 against displacement from'the three scoops arranged within the now smaller opening 28,
,as will clearly appear from a consideration of acaacoo Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. The side members 25 and 26 are disposed within the side boundaries of the scoops, thus permitting the scoops to enter the channels of the conventional sliders, which are well known in this art. The stops 22 form blocking elements preventing the coupling of scoops of opposed stringers and this blocking will take place'within'the bounds'of the slider,'at least with respect to the innermost scoops arranged within the top stop yoke or element. In Fig. of the drawing is shown a slight modiflcation wherein the top stop 3| comprises what might be termed a multiple yoke. In other words,
ers where it would be desirable to check move- It will be apparent that the recessed surfaces oi the coupling end portions of thef'scoops may be said to form'on these coupling end'portions reduced necks for the reception of the top-stop member or yoke.
the side members 32 and 33 instead of being joined just by top and bottom members 34 and 35 are also Joined by two intervening members 36 which form three openings 31 instead of the one large opening 23. The top stop 3| is adapted specifically for mounting on three scoops, and the three scoops will be free to pass through the openings 31, the members 36 being disposed between adiacent scoops; as will be'apparent. Aside from this change in construction, the top stop 3| will be the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive and arranged in positionthe'same as taught in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 6'of the drawing is shown another top stop '36 which differs from the stop 3| primarily in adding to the side members 33 and 40 thereoi extending wings or supplemental stop members 4| and 42, the purpose of which is'to extend beyond the side surfaces of the scoopsto engage the slider, preventing displacement of the slider from the end of the'stringer. This type of construction is adaptable for use in what is termed separable stringers. For example; stringers as applied to lumberjackets and similar uses where the two stringers are completely separated from each other. In such instances, the slider is retained always upon one of the stringers and the top stop of this stringer will include the outwardly extending top wings 4| and 42 to retain members 43, similar to the members 36 and the three recesses 44 similar-to the recesses 31.
In top stops of the kind defined, these stops can be removed by reversely bending the .stop to the end of spreading the side members thereof sufliciently to clear the coupling end portions of the scoops. By employing pliable metal in the top stops, a detached or removed top stop can be re-installed into operative position and hand tools, such as a pair of pliers, can be utilized to accomplish this result. Where suitable tools are not available, any one of the walls of the top stop can be cut or ruptured suiliciently to remove the top stop, and then a new top stop can be reapplied. This type of construction-will lend itself to making of repairs by a dealer or distributor or even by the purchaser. By reason of the simplicity of the device, desired repair can be quickly and easily accomplished. It will be apparent that all attachments as well as detachments'of the top stops is accomplished without in any way injuring or marring the mounting tape of the fastener, in that the top stop is disposed on the coupling portions only of the scoops and beyond the limits of the tape edge. It will also be under- The yoke considered as an article of manu- I facture may be said to comprise a body defined by side and end bars, resulting in the yoke shaped contour of the body. Also, the side bars may be joined by supplemental or intermediate bars which would result in forming a yoke having several recesses or openings.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
