3 Claims.
This invention relates to separable fasteners, particularly covered separablefasteners, and is "specifically directed to the slider applied therewith.
In the use of covered separable fasteners, where a section of the tape or stringer is adapted to rest upon and cover the heads of the meshing fastener elements, a difficulty arises in maintaining such tape or stringer section in condition or position to be disposed flatwise over the heads of the fastener elements when interlocked, particularly with the use of the present type of slider as applied to the so-called open slide fastener as, for example, sliders shown in the patents to Prentice, 1,677,408 and 1,700,514, and Poux 1,817,837 and 1,817,839. This difiiculty is especially evidenced when materials incorporating covered slide fasteners are washed or dry-cleaned or when such materials are used extensively, there is a tendency of the tape or stringer section to curl or bend away from the head of the fastener element.
To obviate this diiflculty, I have provided a slider to be applied with covered slide fasteners, wherein that portion of the slider surface acting upon the tape section covering the slide fastener head is formed as to provide a medium in the form of an extension or wing formation for acting on such tape or stringer sections in advance of the normally acting opposing plate surfaces of the slider.
Specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a slider for covered separable fastener elements, wherein that portion thereof acting on the tape or stringer section adapted to cover the slide fastener head is shaped to provide a forwardly extending projection or wing formation of contour adapted topre-set or guide such tape or stringer section into alignment for flatwise disposition over the heads of the separable fastener elements when the portions of the slider interlocking the separable fastener pass thereover.
Further, it is an object of this invention to provide, in a slider for covered separable fasteners of' the type shown in the pending application of Silberman and Conlin, Serial No. 75,512, wherein there is formed integrally with the flat upper plate of the slider an angularly disposed extension or wing formation, which acts on the section of the tape or stringer normally covering the head of the separable fastener to guide or preset the same, so that such tape or stringer section will lie flatwise and. properly conceal the separable fastener heads when the same are interlocked through action of the remaining parallel plate surfaces of the sliders, the first named extension or wing formation having no action or connection with the interlocking functions or capabilities of the remaining plate surfaces of the slider.
These and other advantages, capabilities and 6 features of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the slider as 10 applied to a separable fastener assembly.

Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, numeral 10 represents a slider having front plate II and rear plate I2, the respective plates being united by integrally formed neck I3 at the wide or flaring portion of the slider. Adjacent the neck within the slider and extending between both front and rear plates, there is disposed a separating post l4 having an integral extension l5 passing through the front plate and 26 bent over to form a holder serving to carry tab I6.
As indicated in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing, the front plate H of the slideris substantially flat and of the same width as rear plate I2, the two platesbeing substantially parallelly spaced, 30 the rear plate, however, having the usual arcuate flanged formation l3 longitudinally along its edges, to encompass the body portions of the fastener elements forming part of the intermeshing fastener element series I1 and Hi, the respective series of which are carried on stringers l9.
As indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing, the stringers l9 are beaded as at 20 intermediate their edges, each having a main attachment portion 2| and a faste' :r element cover 22; the main 40 attachment portion serving to be connected to the material to which the device is applied, and the fastener element cover 22 serving to lie fiat upon and conceal the head portion 23 of the fastener elements, the specific assembly of the stringers carrying fasteners inform the covered slide fastener assembly, being shown and claimed more in detail in co-pending application of Silberman and Conlin, Serial No. 75,512.
taken 15 As indicated in Figures 1 and 2, the flat front plate II is of substantially the same width as the rear plate l2, except that there is provided on the front plate integral wing formation 24 on opposite sides of the neck formation [3 and slope formations 25 adjacent the separating post, the
wing formations extending considerably beyond the adjacent edges 26 of the rear plate and being slightly downwardly inclined towards their extremities, in contradistinction to the substantially flat remaining surface of the front plate, while the slope formations 25 are inclined more sharply in direction opposite to that of the wing formations.
The portions of the respective front and rear plates which, are oppositely disposed serve, in conjunction with the separating post l4 and neck l3, as shown in the Silberman and Conlin application above mentioned, to interlock or separate the fastener element series I! and I8, while in the interlocking operation of the fastener elements sections 22 of the stringers are directed to rest flatwise on the upper surfaces of the fastener elements to conceal the same as at 26 in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The wing formations 24 of the front plate II, as shown in Figure 2, do not have portions oppositely disposed thereto on rear plate l2 and such wing formations extending in advance of edges 25 of the rear plate serve, when the slider is drawn in the direction of the arrow in Figure 1, to interlock the fastener elements; to guide and displace sections 22 of the stringer to substantially flat position over the surfaces of the heads of the fastener elements.
As shown in Figures3 and 4, a slope formation 26 which parallels the triangular formation of the separating post I4, serves to direct the free ends of the fastener cover sections 22 of the stringer so that they may be directed in the manner shown in those figures, from an angular position in Figure 3 to the fiatwise position in Figure 4,
as the slider l moves by a particular stringer section.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a separable fastener device, in combination with a series of opposing interlocking fastener members, having head and jaw portions, stringers for said fastener members, said stringers having portions adapted to overlie the head and jaw portions thereof, a slider cooperating with the respective series of fastener members for interlocking and separating the same, said slider comprising front and rear plates united at one end by a neck, said front and rear plates being of unequal spread, the front plate having portions extending in advance of the edges of the rear plate, and serving to preset the edges of the stringer overlying the head in advance of interlocking the separable fastener members, acted upon by the slider.
2. In a separable fastener device, in combination with a series of opposing interlocking fastener members, having head and jaw portions, stringers for said fastener members, said stringers having portions adapted to overlie the head and jaw portions thereof, a slider cooperating with the respective series of fastener members for interlocking and separating the same, said slider comprising front and rear plates united at one end by a neck, said front and rear plates being of unequal spread, the front plate having portions extending in advance of the edges of the rear plate, and serving to preset the edges of the stringer overlying the head in advance of interlocking the separable fastener members, acted upon by the slider, the portions of the front plate extending in advance of the rear plate comprising wing formations having a downward inclination with respect to the remainder of the front plate.
3. In a separable fastener device, in combination with a series of opposing interlocking fastener members, having head and jaw portions, stringers for said fastener members, said stringers having portions adapted to overlie the head and jaw portions thereof, a slider cooperating with the respective series of fastener members for interlocking and separating the same, said slider comprising front and rear plates united at one end by a neck, said front and. rear plates being of unequal spread, the front plate having portions extending in advance of the edges of the rear plate, and serving to preset the edges of the stringer overlying the head in advance of interlocking the separable fastener members, acted upon by the slider, the aforesaid portions of the front plate being in the nature of wing formations downwardly inclined with respect to the remainder of the front plate and having a guideway into which the edges of the stringer overlying the head are led.
