l seu further, in is` anobject ofthis invention't 15 f Referring to the drawing, numerals II and I2 represent fastener elements which are connected respectively to tapes I3 and I4, the fastener elements being arranged in alternation, and have the conventional projection and recess formation to provide for interlock and separation when the slide fastener is closed or opened through the reciprocation of slider I5.
Referring to Figures 2 to 4 inclusive, each fastener element comprises a head portion I6 and cooperating jaw portions I1 and I8, which jaws define a slot I8 extending transversely of the element from the top surface20 part way across the width or depth thereof.
'I'he fastener elements II and I2 are symmetrical and each head portion I 5 includes a projection 2I on one end thereof and a mating recess 22 on the other end, the respective projections and recesses being so disposed as to provide, upon engagement, for example, of projection 2| of a fastener element in series I2, withl groove 22 in series II, to hold such engaged fastener elements in horizontal alignment as shown in Figure 2,
As indicated in Figures 2 to 5 of the drawing, the fastener elements are substantially curved in contour, al1 edges of the head and jaws being rounded and the portion thereof defining the jaw I8 when the same is attached to the tape being essentially semi-circular in conformation.
As shown specifically in Figure 3, one form of tape I4, involving an offset bead formation, comprises a main attachment portion 23, a bead portion 24, and the fastener head cover portion 25, the particular tape in this embodiment being a woven element in which, intermediate of the edges thereof, there is interlocked the cord or bead 24, the bead substantially replacing some of the warp threads of the woven tape, while adjacent weft threads surround opposite semi-circular surfaces or sections of the tape, the alternate weft threads being in the same plane. In this form of tape the bead is so positioned as to form a substantial offset projection with respect to the normal plane of the tape, and particularly one face of the tape. l
As shown in Figure 3, the normally flat tape I4 intermediate the ends of which is interlocked the bead 24, is disposed in the fastener element shown in Figure 4, so that the bead 24 is completely disposed in substantially circular slot I9, after which the jaw I8 is pressed in a right angular direction to the dotted line position of Figure 4 as designated by the arrow, to form the closure for the tape in conjunction with jaw I1, the edge por- l tions 26 and 21 of the jaws' I1 and I8 serving to press against sections of attachment and fastener cover portions 23 and 25 adjacent the bead to form a secure clamp for the bead and tape.
The tape, before clamping of the fastener elements thereto, is normally in a horizontal plane, except for the bulge of the bead interlocked therewith; and after the clamping of the bead by the jaws I1 and I8 in the slot I9, the main attachment portion 23 and fastener head cover portion 25 of the tape substantially retain their normal fiat positionon the top surface 20 of the fastener, the
f fastener head cover portion 25 being of such length as to extend almost but not quite to the edge of the head I6 of the fastener, so that when two fasteners of the series II and I2 interlock the edges of the fastener head cover portions 25 of the respective tapes abut one another and the fastener head cover portions form a closure covering the fastener elements centrally of the fastening element, completely concealing the metallic fastener elements as shown at the bottom of Figure 1.
In order to operate the slide fastener. the slider I5 associated therewith is constructed to provide flanged bottom element 3U, and fiat top element 3| connected by the usual cam or separator applied in such' devices (here not shown), the bottom element 30 having upstanding anges 32 of spreading wing formation, gradually decreasing in width from edge 33 to 34, the last named edge to be disposed adjacent the peripheral surface of jaws I8 of the fastener, to provide proper interlocking of the fastener elements. The upper plate 3I of the slider is fiat and of the same width and spread wing formation as the bottom element, and is adapted to press against the tape surfaces 23 and 25, as the slider is reciprocated by actuation of the handle 35 attached to the top plate. Since any conventional cam of the type well known in the art may be disposed in the slider between the plates 38 and 3| to act on the fastener elements to separate the same, no showing has been made in the present drawing.
It is to be understood that a slight clearance should prevail between flat plate 3l and the upper surface of the sections 23 and 25 of tape I4, so that such plate in the movement of the slider will serve merely to smooth rather than frictionally press or rub the sections 23 and 25, particularly section 25, since both of these sections normally rest against the top surface of the fastener element.
In the modification shown in Figure 5,v the tape 14, instead of being woven to provide an offset with respect to the main plane and one face of the tape, is so formed as to provide an interlocked bead which is centrally disposed with respect to the tape and has substantially equal projections or bulges with respect to each ,face of the tape. As shown, the tape comprises main attachment and fastener cover portions 23 and 25 and bead 33 interlocked between weft threads in a manner as to project equidistantly on opposite sides of the normal horizontal plane of the tape. The fiat tape carrying the bead of such configuration is inserted in the slot I9 of the fastener element and jaw I8 pressed inwardly in the direction shown in Figure 4, with the result that the cord or bead is surrounded as -at 31 and 33 by adjacent portions of the tape sections 23r and 25, which are pressed thereagainst, and the edges 28 Vand 21 of the jaws I1 and I8 press against the tape sections, to provide a firmlylclamped neck formation, whereby the tape is locked to the fastener, and establishing the flat surface in one plane of sections 23` and 25 of the tape, for the purposes specified.
Associated with the fastener elements and the slider is concealed stop 45, which is clamped to the bead formation of the respective tapes to form a terminal for the `closure slit.
As is clearly shown in the drawing, the tape, including the sections thereof, applied for attachment to material for making the closure and the section for covering the head of the fastener element, are of a single thickness of the same material and are in the same plane. i
Further, the closure formed by the covered slide fastener formation provides a flat top surface with no projections and with the main body of the fastener elements and the slider concealed below the level or plane of the tape, which tape forms the exposed or viewable section of the closure.
