TAFE FOR SLIDE FASTENERS Filed April 21,' 1936 l INVENTOR. Daum S ber-man ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 7, 1941 .UNITED 4STATES TAPE FOR SLIDE FASTENERS ADavid Silberman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Ideal Fastener Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 21, 1936, Serial No. i 5,513
4 Claims.
'fhis invention relates to improvements in tapes orstringers, applied in conjunction with separable slide fastener closures, being specifically directed to a woven tape, the cord or bead of which is disposed intermediate the edges of the tape or Stringer.
Broadly, it is an object of this invention to provide for a tape -or stringer applied in conjunction with separable slide fasteners, which m tape comprises a lwoven material intermediate the edges of ywhich there is inserted in the place of certain of the warp threads a cord or' bead, which element is interlocked with the tape or Stringer by' the weft threads encircling the pela ripheral surfaces of the same.
Specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a tape or Stringer for separable slide' fasteners, wherein there is woven into the tape intermediate its edges, in the place of certain of 20 the warp threads, 'a cord or bead of dimensions considerably greater than the thickness of the tape, the cord or bead providing a bulge or projection of equal depth on Opposite sides of the tape or, if desired, of small bulge on one side and 2g a considerably greater bulge on the other, the
weft being woven so that alternate threads surround the same peripheral sections of the bead or cord and adjacent threads surround opposite peripheral sections of the bead or cord.
30, Still further, it is an object of this invention to provide for a woven tape for separable slide fasteners, comprising a woven element, into which there is interlocked intermediate of its ends, in lieu of certain warp threads, a bead, the
35 bead being adapted to be clamped bythe jaws of a fastener, the portion of the tape on one side of the bead serving to fasten the unit to the de-l vice to which it is applied, and the section of the tape on the other side of the bead serving o to form a cover for the head of the fastener elements, thereby to provide for the formation of a covered slide fastener.
These and other advantages, capabilities and features of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accoinpanyng drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the covered separable fastener. j sa Figure 2 is a perspective `view of one side 'of the covered separable fastener, showing one of the embodiments of the fastener tape.
Figure v3 is a plan view of the fastener tape. Figure 4 is a front elevation in section, taken as along lines 4--4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a modified form of fastener tape.
Figure 6 is -a front elevation in section, taken along lines 6--6 of Figure 5. i
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the fastener 5 tape shown in Figures 5 and 6 as associated with a fastener element.
Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, numeral I0 represents a slide fastener assembly of -the type specified, wherein series II 10 and I2 of mating fastener elements are disposed in alternation on tapes I3 and I4, slide I5 serving to seal or open the closure formed by separable fastener elements by reciprocation in a manner well known to the art. l5
Referring specifically to Figures 2, 3 and 4, there is shown a woven tape 20, intermediate the ends of which is disposed, in lieu of certain warp threads, a bead or cord 2l, in this case, of cylindrical formation, said bead being interlocked between parallel series of weft cords 22 and 23, the cords 22 being normally adjacent cords 23, the alternate cords 22 being parallel and'surrounding the same surface 24 of the bead, while intervening weft cords 23 surround the 25 same peripheral surface 25` of the cord or bead 2|.
In the particular modification shown in Figures 2 to 4, the cord 2| is disposed so that it projects or bulges substantially away from the lower face of the tape 2|) in contradistinction to the 30 slight or unappreciable bulge towards the upper face of tape 20. i
As indicated in Figure 2, the cord or bead 2I separates the tapes into two parts, the fastening portion 26 and the covering portion 2I. In 35 V assembly of the fasteners upon the tape, the tape is placed in iiatwise manner over the top 28 of the fastener element I I, so that the bead or cord portion thereof depends into groove 29 between jaws 30 of the fastener. Upon clamping of the o jaws to position shown in Figure 2, the tape, particularly the bead portion thereof, is enclosed completely within the slot 29 and the edges 3l of the jaws 30 press against sections of the tape adjacent the beadto firmly clamp such 5 portions 32, thus locking the fastener to the tape with thefastening attachment and fastener head cover portions 26 and 2'I of the tape 20 resting flatwise and substantially in one plane on the nat surface 28 of the fastener. 50
so that it bulges equally from both faces of the tape, and the adjacent weft threads 42 and 43 surround opposite semi-circular peripheral surfaces of the bead or cord and are of substantially the same length, the alternate weft threads being parallel to one another and passing in the same direction.
As shown in Figure 7, the length of the portions in the fastener attachment and fastener head cover portions 44 and 45, adjacent the bead 4l, which are clamped by the jaws 30 of the fastener II, are much greater than that clasped in the other embodiment described, but the clamping action of the jaws and the neck formation produced thereby is similar in nature, the fastener attachment surface 44 and fastener head cover surface 45 of the tape, after the clamping of the bead 4| by the jaws of the fastener, resting on upper flat surface 28 of the fastener, to produce substantially the same eifect as that shown in the previous embodiment.
It is obvious that various changes and modications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
