TOP STOP FOR SLIDE FASTENER TAPES Filed Dec. 3 9 1938 INVENTOR Maxlaessling.
ATTO R N EY Patented Feb. 20, 1940/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOP STOP FOR SLIDE FASTENER TAPES Max Kiessling, Waterbury, Conn.
Application December 19, 1938, Serial No. 246,602
1 Claim. This invention relates to slide fasteners, and
' more particularly to an improved form of top stop for the slider member to be attached to a pair of cooperating element-holding tapes.
When slide fastener tapes are applied to the opposite sides of the opening in a. bag, or the like, it has been found that if an attempt is made to close the edges of the opening together at the top of the tapes; the slider member and elements are likely to become jammed. By means of the present invention, the above and other disadvantages have been overcome.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved top stop for the slider member which will maintain the beaded edges of the tapes at the upper end of the opening at each side of the stop spaced apart both above and below the top stop an amount substantially equal to the distance between the diverging outlets at the top of the slider member.
Another object is to provide a top stop device of the above nature which will have at its bottom an arcuate recess shaped to substantially fit the top bridge, or neck of the slider'member.
Still another object is to provide a stop device of the above nature having means to securely grip the opposing beaded edges of the tapes for holding said edges spaced apart the same distances above and below said stop device. v
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved top stop for slide fastener tapes of the above nature which will be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efllcient and durable in use.
. With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front plan view of a stop device for the slider member of a pair of slide fastener tapes as it appears when in its uppermost, position with the opening closed.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the Fig. 5 is a development view of the. stop device in flat condition before bending it into U-form for attachment to'the beads of a pair of slide fastener tapes.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like parts 5 throughout the several views, the numerals l and H indicate a pair of adjacent elementholding tapes of a slide fastener having opposing beaded edges l2 and I3 respectively, along which two spaced rows of fastening elements l4 and ll: of the usual form are securely clamped.
The fastening elements l4 and I5 are adapted to be interlocked and unlocked by means of a slider member l6 of the usual form which may be readily slid along between the beaded edges I2 and 13 by means of a hinged pull tab I I.
In'order to limit the upward movement of the slider member l6, provision is made of a top stop l8 which is adapted to be disposed at the upper end IQ of the opening between the beaded edges l2 and I3 of the tapes l0 and H, and is adapted to hold said beaded edges permanently spaced apart at said upper end a predetermined amount which is preferably equal to the distance between the outlets at the top of the flared end 2| of the slider member l6. By means of this construction it will be seen that the top portion of the tapes will lie flat and parallel to each other when the fastening members l4 and I5 are in unlocked positionfsee Fig. 2). The top stop I8 is also adapted to hold the beaded edges I2 and I3 spaced apart above the upper side of the stop device It an amount equal to the'distance they are spaced apart below it.
The top stop [8 is preferably made by stamping a blank 22 (see Fig. 5) from sheet metal and then forming four inclined grooves 23, 24, 25 and 26 upon the inclined wing portions 21, 28, 29 and. 30 thereof. The wing portions 21 and 29 are connected together by a side plate 3| which is cut away at its outer edge to form an arcuate recess 32. The wing portions 28 and 36 are similarly connected together by a side plate 33 which is cut away at its outer edge to form an arcuate recess 34. The wing-connecting side plates 3l and 33 are joined together by a center neck portion'35. The spacing between the grooves 23, 24 and 25, 26 is equal to the distance it is desired to hold the beaded edges l2 and I3 apart at the upper part of the tapes. The depth of the recesses 32 and 34 is substantially equal to the width of the protruding neck 36 of the flared portion 2| of the slide member l6, so that the opening l9 between the tapes at this point will 55 abuts the stop device l8, as shown in Fig. 1.
The inclined grooves 23, 24, 25 and 26 have sharp edges which bite into the surfaces of the beads I 2 and I3 to strengthen the grip of the top slider stop thereon and effectively prevent said beads from sliding or twisting with respect to said stop without injury to said beads.
Assembly The top stop device I8 is adapted to be assembled to the tapes I0 and II by first disposing the blank 22 in such a position that the inclined wings 28 and 30 will lie underneath the tapes l0 and H, and with the beaded edges l2 and I3 resting across the inclined grooves 24 and 26. The Wings 21 and 29 will then be bent down upon the beaded edges l2 and l3,-the neck por- I tion being arcuately bent as shown in Fig. 4. It will thus be seen that the beaded edges !2 and i3 will be tightly clamped between the wings 21, 29 and 28, 30, respectively, so that the top stop l8 will be securely attached to the tapes I0 and H.
When the top stop it is in assembled position, the recesses 32 and 34 will be parallel and will form a seat for the protruding neck 36 of the slide member l6.
One advantage of the present invention is that in use no binding will occur between the slider member l6 and the fastening elements I4 and I5,
be substantially filled when the slide member I6 nor with the stop device 58. Furthermore, the beaded edges l2 and it both above and below the stop device l8 will be maintained in aline- :ment and spaced apart an amount equal to the spacing of the outlets of the flared portion 2| of the slider member l6.
While there has been disclosed in this specifi- I cation one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all of the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
A top stop device for a slide fastener wherein a pair of tapes having opposing beaded edges are provided, said device including a pair of opposing fiat side plates a U-shaped portion connecting said side plates, each side plate having a pair of wing portions, said wing portions being provided with converging opposed grooves to engage the beaded edges of said tapes to hold them in spaced apart relation.
