connection with shoes and garments, to take the place of the usual buttons on the former and the usual hooks and eyes on the latter.

My invention can be cheaply and etliciently manufactured and preferably consists of a plurality of sections adapted to be attached to the component parts of the garment or article and which are so related as to secure the component part-s of the garment or article in a connected relation. The device furthermore permits of securing the component parts of a garment or article in a manner which will preventaccidental separation of the connected parts while at the same time the sections can be readily disengaged when it is desired to unfasten or separate the parts of the garment.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my device showing the same applied to a garment; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the upper section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower section; and Fig. t is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 1 -1 in Fig. 1, showing the preferred manner of securing the sections to the parts of the garment.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a fastener 10 consisting of independent sections 11 and 12, the section 11 being adapted for connection with the inner side of a part 13 of a garment 14 and preferably designated as an upper section and the section 12 being adapted for connection with the outer side of a part 15 of the garment 14 and preferably designated the lower section, it being readily apparent that the sections 11 and 12 are provided and arranged in the manner mentioned for the purpose of permitting the component parts 13 and 15 of the garment 1st to be connected in a way which will prevent accidental disconnection of the parts.

The upper section 11 is formed of a single piece of material and includes an attaching plate 16, a lateral shank 17 projecting from one end of the attaching plate 16 and a head 18 project-ing laterally from an end of the shank 17 and preferably in parallel relation to the attaching plate 16, the said head 17 being provided on the upper side thereof with a recess 19 and on the under side thereof with an outwardly struck bead 20. The attaching plate 16 is provided with a plurality of apertures 21 and a headed staple 22 is adapted to be passed through the part 13 of the garment 14: and then passed through the apertures 21, after which the free ends oi' the staple are bent upon the attaching plate in order to secure the upper section 11 on the part 13 of the garment, as will be readily understood, it being further understood, however, that the said section may be attached to the garment in any convenient manner. The lower section 12 is also formed of a single piece of material and includes an attaching plate 23 having a lateral upwardly extending shank 24 projecting from one end thereof, the said shank terminating in an integral laterally extending head 25 arranged in parallel relation to the plate 23, the said head being provided on the upper side thereof with a recess 26 and on the under side thereof with a downwardly struck bead 27. In this respect it will be apparent that the upper and lower sections 11 and 12 are substantially similar in shape and configuration but the upper face of the attaching plate 23 of the lower section 12 is provided with longitudinally extending spaced ribs 28 converging toward the shank 24; and constituting guide members for the head 18 of the upper section 11 when the upper and lower sections are connected. The lower section 12 can be secured to the part 15 of the garment 14 in the same manner as the upper section 11 is secured to the part 13 or can be secured to the garment in any other convenient manner.

Now assuming that the upper section 11 has been connected to the part 13 of the garment 14 and the lower section 12 has been secured to the part 15 of the garment 14,

when it is desired to connect the parts 13 and 15, the part carrying the upper section 13 is pulled over and beyond the edge of the part 15 so that the head 1S of the upper section can loe arranged between the attaching plate 23 and head 25 of the lower section 12. Now when the parts 13 and 15 are moved apart from the position in which they have been moved in order to arrange the upper and lower sections in connecting position, it will be seen that the ribs 23 will guide the head 18 inasmuch as the bead 20 of the upper section moves along the surface of the attaching plate 23 and between the ribs so that the downwardly struck bead 27 of the lower section will project into the recess 19 in the head of the upper section and the downwardly struck bead 2() on the head of the upper section will be arranged immediately beneath and in vertical alinement with the bead 27, the upper and lower sections being now in connected position to secure the component parts 13 and 15 of the garment 14; in the desired relation. Now it will be readily apparent that aside from connecting the parts 13 and 15 of the garment 14, the configuration and relative arrangement of the sections 11 and 12 when in connected position permits of a pivotal movement of one section with respect to the other without, however, resulting in the disengagement of the sections and therefore when the component parts 13 and 15 of the garment lll have been secured in the desired position the relative arrangement of the upper and lower sections will permit of suilicient play between the parts of the garment without resulting in their becoming oisarranged.

When it is desired to disconnect the upper and lower sections it is only necessary to move the upper section 11 rearwardly with respect to the lower section 12, it being apparent that in order to secure the component parts of the garment it is only necessary to arrange the sections 11 and 12 in an overlapping position as mentioned heretofore so that the attaching plate 16 of the upper section will lie above and in spaced relation to the attaching plate 23 of the lower section, while the heads 18 and 25 of the upper and lower sections respectively will be interposed between the plates of the sections, with the head 25 of the lower section in superimboots l intend to have the device take the` place of the usual buttons and in garments have the device take the place of the usual hooks and eyes, it will be understood that l do not limit the use of my device to wearing apparel of the character mentioned and that the invention may be used for various other purposes where it is desired to connect component parts of articles or structures.

rllhe sections forming my device are each preferably struck from stamped sheet metal or the like and can be manufactured at a very low cost to provide a simple, durable and efficient fastening device.

Having thus described my invention, l claim:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a fastening device comprising a plurality of connectible sections, each formed of a. single piece of material. comprising an attaching plate, a shank, and a lateral head having a portion thereof struck downwardly to provide a recess and a bead, and ribs formed with the plate of one of the sections having when the sections are being fastened the bead on the head of the other section lying therebetween, with the bead on the head of the first mentioned section extending into the recess in the head of the said other sec tion.

2. ln a fastening device, the combination with a plurality of conncctible sections, one of which is formed of a single piece of material providing an attaching plate, a shank and a head, having a portion struck from its face to form a recess and a bead, of converging ribs formed on the other section and adapted to have the said bead lie therebetween when the said sections are connected, and a bead struck from the other section and adapted to lie in the recess formed in the head of the first mentioned section.
