Application filed January To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. PoLLARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Cuff Links, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in separable cuff links wherein a pair of ornamental heads are provided which carry shank members and cooperating separable latch devices at the adjacent ends of the shank members for separably connecting the two sections of the cuff link together.
A further object of the invention resides in the particular connection between the adjacent ends of cuff link sections wherein a latch hook or finger carried by one link is adapted for engagement with a keeper plate or strip carried by the other link with a spring device associated with the keeper plate and latch device engaging the keeper plate to retain the latch hook in engaged position therewith against accidental displacement.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form` combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Each link embodies an ornamental head l of any desired configuration and ornamenta tion that is carried by a shank 2 while a plate 3, oval-shaped in plan view is formed at the inner end of each shank 2 as illustrated. The plates 3 of oval formation carry outwardly directed flanges 4 at their peripheral edges that are inturned as at 5 to form keeper shoulders for the latch hook and keeper devices to be described.
The male member of the link embodies a plate 6 of oval formation that is secured within the fiange portion 4 of the plate 3 by engaging the flange 5. The plate 6 has a relatively large centrally cutaway portion 7 into which an arm 8 projects from one edge thereof as shown in Fig. 7 while a latch hook 9` projects perpendicularly from said plate having a hook extension 9"L at the free end thereof. The spring plate 10 of oval formation as shown in detail in Fig. 8 is confined in the male member of the fastener between the plate 6 and back wall or plate 3, the. central portion of the plate 10 having a struck-out spring arm 11 extending in a direction toward the latch hook 9 as shown in Fig. 6. The plates 6 and 10 are confined within the male member of the fastener by the overturned flange or beaded edge 5 thereof.
The female member of the link embodies the keeper plate 12, shown more clearly in Figures 4 and 5 that is outwardly arched with a pair of alined slots 13 separated by the bridge piece 14 at the center of the keeper plate 12. A spring arm 15, shown in detail in Fig. 9` is interposed between the keeper plate 12 and the back plate 3 of the link member to be engaged by the latch hook 9 when the link members are assembled as shown in Fig. 6. As shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the back plate 3 of the female member is grooved as at 3a to accommodate expansion of the spring 15 during the act of assembling the link members.
In the ordinary separable fastener of the general character described herein, the link members are usually assembled by forcing the same into engagement with each other by direct pressure on'a straight link, and one of the important features of this invention resides in the novel manner of assembling the link members. The latch hook 9 is positioned in either of the slots 13 and by gripping the heads 1 of the link members between the thumb and forenger and causing relative sliding movement of the link members in the proper direction, the latch hook 9 compresses the spring plate 15 to pass beneath the bridge piece 14 on the keeper plate 12 with the hook extension 9n of the latch hook being positioned at the opposite side of the bridge piece as shown in F ig. 6 and so retained. In this position, the spring arm 11 upon the spring plate 10 engages the outer face of the bridge piece 1a while the spring plate 15 engaging the adjacent side of the latch hook 9 securely holds the latch hook in engaged position with the bridge piece 14 of the keeper plate against accidental displacement thereof. In separating the link members, it is only necessary to grip the same between the thumb and forelinger and upon slight pressure on the link members and sliding movement thereof in the proper directions, the link members are easily and quickly separated.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a separable cuff button, a pair of link members, a latch hook carried by one link, a keeper plate for the latch hook carried by the other link, and spring devices associated with. the keeper plate and latch hook and exerting pressure axially of the links when the same are connected for retaining the latch hook in engagement with the keeper plate.
2. In a separable cu button, a pair of link members, a latch hook carried by one link, a keeper plate for the latch hook car-- ried by the other link, and a spring plate positioned inwardly of the keeper plate and exerting pressure axially of the links toward the keeper plate for forcing the latch hook into engagement with the keeper plate.
3. In a separable cuff button, a pair of link members, a latch hook carried by one link, a keeper plate for the latch hook carried by the other link, a spring positioned axially inwardly of the keeper plate and exerting pressure toward the latter for forcing the latch hook toward said plate, and a spring disposed axially inwardly of the latch hook and exerting pressure toward the latter for forcing the keeper plate toward the latch hook to maintain said link members connected.
4. In a separable culip button, a pair of link members, a latch hook carried by one link, a keeper plate for the latch hook carried by the other link, a spring device arranged inwardly of the keeper plate and engaging the latch liook and a spring device arranged inwardly of the latch hook and engaging the keeper plate when the links are connected in engagement with the keeper plate, and said latch hook and keeper plate being constructed to require relative sliding movements during the act of connecting and disconnecting the same.
5. In a separable cuff button, a pair of link members, a latch hook carried by one link, a keeper plate for the latch hook carried by the other link, spring devices underlying the keeper plate and latch hook and exerting pressure axially outwardly toward the same for retaining the latch hook in engagement with the keeper plate, said keeper plate having a pair of alined slots therein and an intermediate bridge piece to be engaged by the latch hook.
