Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 24, 1908.
Patented Apr. 18, 1911. Serial No. 459,431.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. GREN- Nilvenu, av citizen of the Unlted States, re-
siding at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in clasps or separable fasteners of the hook and eye type.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical detach able or separable fastening of this character which may be effectively used as a clasp for a garment supporter or the like, for a hook and eye fastener for ladies dresses and other garments and for poses.
The above and other objects of the invention are attained in its preferred embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of vention adapted for use tener or clasp for analogous purone form of the inas a separable fasa hose or-garment supporter; F ig. 2 is a sectional view through said clasp; Fig. 3 shows the two members of the clasp or fastener separated; Fig. 4 shows a modified form of the invention, the same being in the form of a hook and eye fastening; Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the same; and Fig. 6 shows the two members of the hook and eye fastening separatec.
The invention contemplates two separable or detachable members 1, 2 each of which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, the former having a hook 3 and the latter an eye or opening 1 and a depression or seat 5 arranged adjacent to said eye or opening. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings the member 1 has its fiat body portion formed with a longitudinal slot 6 to receive the band or elastic 7 and the hook 3 is formed by bending the extremity of a reduced portion or tongue 8 centrally arranged on said body plate. The other member 2 in this embodiment of the invention is in the form of a segmentalshaped body' plate formed adjacent to its ends with slots 9 to receive the band or elastic 10, the eye 4 being formed adjacent to the center of its long curved outer edge, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. Said eye or opening 4 is adapted to receive the tongue 8 and the hook 3 on said tongue is adapted to swing up into the seat 5 which is formed in the bottom or under face of the body plate immediately in rear of the eye 4: by stamping said portion of the body plate outwardly, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2. By constructing the member 1 with the tongue 8 having the bent or curved hook 3 and the member 2 with the eye a and the depressed seat 5, and by making both members of sheet metal, it will be seen that they may be produced at a very small cost, may be quickly and easily engaged with and disengaged from each other, will be effectively retained in their interlocked position and will be an admirable fastener or clasp for garment supporters, hose supporters, skirt plackets and other places where the members of the fastener are more or less under tension and a fastener of flat construction is desired. It will be noted that the depressed seat 5 for the hook 3 not only serves as a seat for said hook but that it also serves as a guard to cover the upwardly projecting end of the hook and prevent all liability of the clothes being torn by the hook and of the person being cut or scratched by the same. Furthermore, the outer face or surface of the stamped seat 5 is rounded so as to provide a smooth surface and so that it projects to a very slight extent above the plane of the outer or upper face of the mcmher 2.
The embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings is in the form of ahook and eye and the essential features of the invention are identical in this form or embodiment as in the one above described. The body plate of the hook member 1, instead of having a slot or opening 6, has two diverging portions 11 formed with eyes or openings 12 by means of which said member may be sewed to a portion of a dress or other garment 13. The eye member 2 has its body plate similarly formed with diverging portions 14 having eyes or openings 15 for a similar purpose. This form of the invention is admirably adapted for closing the placket of a skirt, closing a body waist and for all purposes for which a hook and eye fastening is applicable.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
The herein described clasp for personal wear comprising two members each formed from a single piece of sheet metal, one memher consisting of a body plate formed with apertured attaching portions and with the reduced tongue 8, the latter being bent to form the U-shaped hook 3'with its bill disposed in a plane at right angles to the plane of the body plate, the other member consisting of abody plate formed with apertured attaching portions and with the elongated opening 4 to receive said tongue, the last mentioned body plate being also formed with the curved seat 5 arranged in the bottom face of said body plate adjacent to and parallel with the opening at and adapted to receive said U-shaped hook 3, said seat 5 being stamped upwardly from the bottom face of the body plate or member and having a rounded top to provide a guard to cover the projecting upper end of the hook, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS B. GRENNINGER.
