SAFETY DEVICE- FOR PIN TONGUES.
SPEGIFIGATTON forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,715, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed January 25,1902. Serial No. 91,271. EN!) mdtlei-l To all whom it mayboncern:
Be it known that I, OTTO WENTZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and Stateof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Pin-Tongues, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety device for the pin-tongue of breastpins, badges, or similar articles, and has for its object to provide means for securely engaging the pin-tongue, so as to prevent the accidental unfas'tening of the same. H
For this purpose the invention consists of a safety device for pin-tongues, comprising a tubular body having a perforated end, abifurcated rest provided at said end, a rod housed in said body and projecting from the perforated end thereof, a longitudinally-movable socket mounted on the projecting end of said rod, a spring engaging said rod, a pintongue pivoted, to said tubular body, said movable socket adapted to engage the point of said pin-tongue, as will be more fully described hereinafter and. finally pointed-but in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my safety device that is adapted for use in breastpins, badges, or similar articles. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section showing in dotted lines the parts in open position. Figs.'4 and 5 are respectively a side elevation and a vertical 1ongitu dinal section of the invention, showing the pin-tongue in open position; and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on lines 6 6, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the safety device for a pin-tongue that is adapted to be applied to breastpins, badges, or similar articles is composed of atubularbodyA, the pin-tongue B, the spring-actuated socket C for receiving the end of the pin-tongue D, and the aux- 5 iliary securing means D, that additionally secures the pin-tongue from becoming unfa's tened.
The tubular body A is open at one end and is provided thereat with a longitudinal slot at, that is flanked at its outer end by the lugs 00', between which the pin tongue is pivoted.
The opposite end of the tubular body Ais provided with a central aperture a and has arranged flush with its face the bifurcated rest orstandard a The pin tongue B is pref- 5 5 erably secured in a mounting b, that is pivotally secured between the lugs a and that is provided with the finger 17, disposed parallel to the pin-tongue and adapted to pass into the longitudinal slot a of the tubular body when 6c the pin-tongue is depressed, so that the same can be engaged by the auxiliary securing device D.
The socket G is secured at its base 0 to the projecting end of the rod 0', that is housed in the tubular body A. At the inner end of the rod 0 is provided the auxiliary securing device D, which consists of the plate (1, that is supported and secured on the stud d,which latter is mounted on the end of the rod 0 and projects through the longitudinal slot an approximately midway between the ends of the same. Between the stud d and the apertured end of the tubular body A is interposed around the rods the-spring E, which retains the socket O and the plate 01 in proper rela tion, respectively, to the point of the pintongue and to the finger-b when the same are in closed position.
sired to secure the pin-tongue, and the socket G is of a flaring shape, so as to facilitate grasping the same between the fingers. This action taking place against the compressionspring E movessimultaneously the plate (1,
so as to permit the finger b to lower through the longitudinalslot of the tubular body and the pin-tongue to lower to the rest a when the pull that is exerted upon the socket is 0 released, so that the socket returns to its normal position under the action of the spring and engages the point of'the pin-tongue and the plate d returns to its normal position, covering the slot a, so as to lock the finger b additionally to the socket C, engaging the pin-tongue.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A safety device for pin-tongues, comprising a tubular body having a perforated end, a bifurcated rest provided at said end, a rod housed in said tubular body and projecting from the perforated end thereof, a
longitudinally-movable socket mounted on the projecting end of said rod, a spring engaging said rod, and a pin-tongue pivoted to said tubular body, substantially as set forth.
2. A safety device for pin-tongues, comprising a tubular body having a longitudinal slot at one end thereof, a pin-tongue pivoted to said end, a spring-actuated socket at the opposite end of said tubular body, a rod in said tubular body carrying said spring-actuated socket, a finger connected with said pintongue adjacent its pivotal point, and means at the inner end of said rod for engaging said finger, substantially as set forth.
3. A safety device for pin-tongues, com- OTTO WENTZEL.
