I are WILLIAM H. NUTTER, OF SHELTON, NEBRASKA.
HAT-PIN GUARD.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. Nu'r'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to a hat pin guard designed particularly for use on points of hat pins and, serving in use to ei'i'ectively guard the point of the pin.
The main object 0f the present invention is the provision of a hat pin guard of similar structure and including a similar movable part, the clamping action of the pin point being automatically maintained and released by a simple manipulation.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 a sectional view showing my improved pin guard in place. Fig. 9. is a front elevation of the guard.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, my improved pin guard comprises a body member 1 which is preferably oi? semi-circular shape. The body may be hollow and may be otherwise shaped, though the shape described is preferred in order that the flat portion thereof may provide a means for the connection of any suitable ornament thereto. The rounded surface of the body is formed with a flaring pin opening 9 in which the point of the hat pin 3 is inserted.
.Vithin the body is arranged the locking member which comprises a suitable length of spring material secured at one terminal as 4t to the base of the body projected therefrom in a plane curved toward the opposite surface of the body, as at 5, and then formed in a return loop as (3, projected in a straight line toward the opening .2, as at 7, and terminally formed with an angularly bent portion 7 to be engaged by a finger piece 8 which projects through a slot 9 in the wall of the body. The portions 5 and 7 of the locking member are formed with pin receiving openings 10, and these openings are so disposed that when the sprin is fully compressed, that is, by the complete depression of the finger piece 8 so that when the section Specification of Letters Patent.

'7 is at its limit of inward movement the openings 10 in said curved sections are in alinement with the pin-receiving openings 2 in the body.
Atter the introduction of the pin point, which is accomplished with the spring fully compressed it will be obvious that upon release ot the pressure the spring sections tend to return to normal position separating the sections 5 and T. This movement will operate toward moving the opening 10 in the section 7 out of alinement with the opening 10 in the section This action will exert a frictional binding upon the pin point of sutiicient force to hold the guard in place and prevent its accidental separation from the pin. \Vhen it is desired to separate the pin from the guard the spring is again compressed as will be obvious relieving the triotioual migagement and releasing the pin.
Aside from the details noted the guard may be of any shape and ornamented as desired, the use of any appropriate material and a construction of the guards in any desired size being contemplated.
lYhat is claimed is:
A hat pin guard including a body comprising a flat plate and a rounded cover rising therefrom, said cover being formed with a pin receiving opening, and a locking member arranged wholly within the body and comprising a single length of spring material bent to provide a bowed portion and a projection extending angularly from one terminal of said bowed portion, the ends of said bowed port-ion bearing upon said plate. said angular projection toward and past the opening in the cover, thi angular pl'fi'jQCtiOl'l and bowed portion of the locking member being formed with openings adapted to aline with each other and with the opening in the cover in a certain position oi. the portions ot said member other than normal, and means for operating one of the portions at said member to move the portions into such relative position.
In testimony whereof l aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM l-l. NUTTER.
