To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES FREDERICK GAUNT and ARTHUR ALLEN, subjects of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at the city of Birmingham, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to point protectors for ladies hat pins and consists of a hat pin point protector which is made of a sinuous tubular form open at one end for the insertion of the point part of the hat pin, said tubular part being of such a length and diameter as by its sinuosity to grip the hat pin when inserted therein. The closed end of the point protector is by preference made with a knob or enlargement to facilitate holding the hat pin point protector by the thumb and finger when inserting it on to or removing it fro-m the pointed end of the hat pin, and the other or open end of the hat pin protector is made with a trumpet mouth to facilitate the insertion of the pointed end of the hat pin therein.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a hat pin point protector constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the said hat pin point protector; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the closed end of the same; Fig. 4 is an elevation of the open end of the same; Fig. 5 is a plan of a stamped sheet metal blank for forming the said hat pin point protector; Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the said stamping; Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 8 is a cross sectional elevation of a metal ring which is used to hold together the two halves of the trumpet mouth end of the hat of the said ring.
Our said hat pin point protector is made of metal or other suitable hard substance and is of a sinuous tubular form and of slightly larger internal diameter than is the diameter of the hat pin to be inserted therein, and the sinuosity of the tubular part 1 of the hat pin point protector is such that when the hat pin is inserted therein the point protector touches and grips it at three points which points are respectively marked 2, 3 and 4E. The hat pin point protector has one end 5 open and trumpet shaped and the other end is closed and made of bulbous form or otherwise with a knob or enlargement 6 so that this part can be gripped by the thumb and finger when inserting the hat pin point protector on to the hat pin or removing the hat pin point protector therefrom. Said hat pin point protector is by preference, although not necessarily, made from a sheet metal blank which is stamped in dies so that portions are raised on one side corresponding with the halves of the said hat pin point protector if it were divided along its longitudinal center line in a plane at right angles to the curves. This will be understood by an examination of Figs. 5, 6 and 7 where it will be seen that the stamping has two half sinuous tubular parts 1, formed with half trumpet shaped mouth ends 5 and also two half knobs 6 the latter being connected together by a very short to-ngue,.7 so that when the superfluous metal 8 has been clipped ofi then the two halves can be folded at the short tongue 7 bringing their two fiat sides together so that they meet along the longitudinal center line 9. The two halves in this form are then secured together by a trough section metal ring 10 which is shown separately in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 and which is made of the proper diameter and shape to fit on to the trumpet end 5 and is then secured thereon by the flange 11 of the ring being closed on to and around the trumpet shaped mouth as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, thus the two halves of the stamping forming the hat pin point protector are secured together without solder ing.
Although making the sinuous tubular hat pin point protector in halves as above described is what we prefer, it is to be understood that our invention is not limited to this method of construction as if desired the hat pin point protector may consist merely of an open ended sinuous metal or other suitable tube which is made in one piece.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- A hat pin point protector, comprising a sinuous tube open at one end and closed at the other end and adapted to grip and cover the pointed end of a hat pin when inserted therein, the open end of said tube being flared outwardly to form a bell mouth, the closed end of said tube being knob-shaped, said tube, bell mouth and knob being formed from a single stamped sheet metal blank names to this specification in the presence folded cent-rally upon itself, and a flanged of two subscribing Witnesses.
