Description

D. M. STOCKDALE.
HATPIN.
APPLICATION IIEIJ FEB. I. 1919.
1,350,945. Patented Aug. 24, 1920.

@trof/11mg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IATPIN.
Application filed February 7, 1919.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Donsnr M. STOCK- nann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carniichaels7 in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in I-Iatpins, of which the following is a specification.
rIlhis invention relates to a novel construction of hat pin, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a safety device for preventing the projecting end of the hat pin from injuring anyone.
Another object of the invention is to make the safety device slidable on the pin and to provide means for holding it in adjusted Josition.
The inventionA also consists Vin certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several part-s, to be hereinafter fully described, Y
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a view of the invention with parts in section.
F ig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the spring.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 1 4 of Fig, 2.
As shown in these views, I use a pair of pins, indicated by the numerals l and 2. Each of these pins is provided with a head 3 and with the safety device ll. This safety device is of bell shape with a small cylindrical end A bell shaped flange 6 extends inwardly from the outer edge of the main part and the small end of this flange is adapted to grip the pin. This small end of the flange ends substantially midway ofthe device. A spring 7 is secured to the cylindrical part and has its end bent at right Specification of Letters Patent.

angles as at 8 and extending through a hole 9, formed in the device adjacent the end of the flange. This end of the spring is provided with an opening l() for receiving the pin.
It will be understood that the two pins are passed into the hat from opposite sides and are so located that the point of one pin will project from the hat adjacent the head of the other pin, so that the projecting points will be covered by the safety devices. rfter the pins are in place the spring I is depressed so that the device may be moved along the pin toward the hat to cover the projecting end of the other pin. When the spring is rele( sed it will force the pin against the edge of the cylindrical part 5 and the flange so as to frictionally hold the device on the pin.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that suoli changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
VVh-at I claim is :m-
l. In combination with a pair of hat pins, a safety device on each pin forreceiving the end of the other pin, said device consisting of a bell-shaped member and means for frictionally holding the device on the pm.
2. The combination with a pair of hat pins a device on each pin for receiving the end of the other pin, said devices comprising a bell-shaped member having a tubular part through which the pin passes and a bellshaped inner flange for receiving the end of the other pin and spring means for frictionally engaging the carrying pin.
In testimony' whereof I affix my signature.
DORSEY M. STOCKDALE.
