SAFETY PIN.
Application filed November 28, 1924. Serial No. 752,763.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bnssm MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety pins and has for an object the provision of means for securing the pointed end of the pin within the clasp, whereby its accidental removal will be prevented.
To this end the invention provides means located within and disposed substantially across the line of movement of the pin when the latter is entering or leaving the clasp, the saidmeans being adapted to enter an eye or opening provided in the pin.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety pin constructed in accordance with the invention and shown in open position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a section taken substantially on the line 8-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the clasp carrying end of the pin with the clasp removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the bar of the pin which is provided at one end with the usual spring loop 11 from which extends the pin 12, the latter being provided with a penetrating point 13. Extending through the pin adjacent the point 13 is an elongated opening 14 whose purpose will be later apparent.
The end of the bar 10 opposite the coil 11. is curved as shown at 15 in Figure 1 of the drawings and secured upon this curved portion is a clasp 16, the latter having spaced side walls 17 and 18 between which the pointed extremities of the pin 12 are adapted to be received. The extremity of the curved end 15 of the bar 10 is-bent substantially at right angles and is curved as indicated at 19 in a direction transverse of the clasp 16, the end of this curved portion being preferably flattened to provide a retaining element 20 which is adapted to enter the opening 14: of the pin 12. This retaining element 20 is disposed substantially across the line of movement of the pin when the latter is entering or leaving the clasp.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the pin 12 may be freely inserted within the clasp 16 between the walls 17 and 18 and moved laterally so that the retaining element 20 will enter the opening 14 and as this retaining element is disposed across the line of movement of the pin as the latter enters and leaves the clasp, the pin will repoaindin closed position until purposely reease The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention What is claimed is:-
1. In a safety pin, a resilient pin portion having an opening therein adjacent the point,
' a clasp for removably securing the pointed end of the pin and a retaining element adapted to enter the opening, said element being located within the clasp and disposed across the line of movement of the pin as the latter enters or leaves the clasp.
2. In a safety pin, a resilient pin portion having an opening therein adjacent the pin, a clasp for removably receiving the pointed end of the pin and a retaining element adapted to enter the opening, said element being located within and extending laterally from one side wall of the clasp in the line of movement of the pin as the latter enters or leaves the clasp.
