Description
M. W. BATTLE MENU CARD HOLDER June 24, 1924.
Filed June 19. 1923 Patented June 24, 1924.
MARY W. BATTLE, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
nnno cem) HOLDER.
Application filed June 19, 1923. Serial No. 646,368.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY W. BATTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, the city and county of Denver, and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Menu-Card Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,.and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon,
- which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to menu card holders and has reference to an improved means for holding the card in place.
In menu card holders of this type, it is necessary to provide means whereby the card can be readily removed, and whereby the same can be secured in place with a minimum amount of work.
It is customary in this "type of holders to provide the holder with a pair of spaced hooks which are adapted to project through the crease in the card and to connect the ends of the hooks by means of a rubber band.
This construction, although it is practicable, is not as desirable as it should be and it is my object to improve thereon.
In my present invention, I secure to the hinge pin a pair of spaced hooks which have a shank portion projecting through the menu. card. Instead of connecting the hooks with an elastic band, I provide a wire which has an opening near each end and which carries clamps that are adapted to engage the shanks and hold the wire in place.
In order to better and more clearly describe my invention, I shall have reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a menu card holder in partly open position, showing the menu card held in place by my improved means.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the hinge portion of the holder detached therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a section of the hinge portion taken on line 33, Fig. 2.
"Fig. 4 is a side elevation'of the card re taining wire.
Fig. 5 is a section ofa portion of Fig. 1 taken on a line corresponding to line 3-3, Fig. 2, showing the construction of the clamping member and the manner in which it is applied to the projecting member.
are doubled over and have their creased side notched to form inter-engaging members 6 and 7 through which the hinge pin 8 passes. Secured to the hinge pin 8are two projecting members9 and 10 which are preferably formed from a piece of wire which is doubled on itself to form the pins 9- and 10. One end 11 of the wire is bent into the shape of an eyelet which embraces thehinge pin 18. TThe other end 13 of these wires is bent at right angles to the projections or shanks 9 and 10 and has at its extreme end an eyelet 14 which is adapted to receivea' pin 15 whose inner end projects into the opening in the hinge and which is held therein by means of solder 16. It is apparent that the projecting members 9 and 10 are free to rotate, to a limited extent, about the axis of the hinge pin 12 and that by engaging the part 13 with the finger, the projecting parts 9 and 10 may be held so as to point in any desired direction whereby they can be readily inserted into openings in the crease of the menu card 17. In order to hold the menu card in place, I provide a rod 18 which has at each end an eyelet 19. These eyelets are spaced apart the same distance as the projecting portions 9 and 10 in order that they may receive the projection. For the purpose of holding the rod 18 inplace, I provide clamping members 20 which may be soldered to the ends of the wire or otherwise connected thereto. Each clamp 20 consists of a casing 21, the opening through which is tapered as indicated by numeral 22. Within the casing thereis reciprocably mounted a tubular member 23 whose inner end is split and provided with cam members 24. A spring 25 surrounds the tubular member and abuts its ends against the cams 24 and the inwardlyturned flange 26 on the end of the casing.
The members 9 and 10 project into the opening in the tubular members 22 and the rod 18 is held against withdrawal by the clamp ing action of the cams 24 in a manner readily apparent from an inspection of Fig. 5. The tubular members 23 have heads 27 which may be grasped whenever it is desired to release the rod 18.
I have shown the rod 18 as provided with eyelets or openings near each end, but it is evident that the rod may have its ends extending beyond the openings. If, for any reason, it might be found desirable to do so, the parts 18 and 14 may be omitted.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and fiective means for securing a menu card in place in a holder. My retaining means is positive in its action, of neat and substantial construction and can be readily applied and removed.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new is:
1. A menu card holder comprising a twopart cover hingedly connected, a pair of shanks secured to said holder near the hinge thereof, a rod provided with two spaced openings adapted to cooperate with said shanks, and means comprising a pair of clamping members for removably securing I the rod in place, the clamping means being constructed to encase and conceal the said shanks.
2. A menu card holder comprising two cover members, each provided with interen a in hin e ortions a bin e in cooperating with said hinge portions, a pair of projecting members secured to said hinge pin at spaced points, a rod having openings spaced apart a distance equal to the distance of the projecting members whereby the latter may enter the holes, and spring operated clamping means cooperatively related to the rod and the projecting members for holding them in operative relation, the clamping means being constructed to encase and conceal the projecting member.
3. A menu card holder comprising in combination two cover members each provided with a plurality of complementary inter-engaging hinge portions, a hinge pin cooperating with said hinge portions for the purpose of hingedly connecting the cover members, and a member movably connected with the hinge pin, projecting outwardly there.- from and having a portion extending parallel therewith to facilitate manipulation.
4:. A menu card holder comprising a twopart cover hingedly connected, a pair of shanks secured to said holder near the hinge thereof, a rod provided with spaced openings adapted to cooperate with said shanks and means comprising a pair of securing members for securing the rod to said shanks, the securing means being constructed to encase and conceal the said shanks.
In testimony whereof I a'lfix my signature.
MARY W. BATTLE.
