HAT-PIN-IPOINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2,1912.
Application filed September 6, 1 9 11. Serial No. 647,814.
, accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hatpin pointprotector, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a device that can be easily mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to serve wo purposes, namely, that of locking the pin in a hat and preventing its accidental displacement, and guarding the end of the pin whereby pedestrians or otherob ects cannot be injured when contacting with the same.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combined lock and guard for a hatpin that is inexpensive to manufacture and susceptible to any desired ornamentation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, cmnlnnat-ion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pin having a guard thereon in accordance with this invcntion, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the guard and lock, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a funnel-shaped mouthpiece adapted to form part of the guard and lock, Fig. 4; is a side elevation of a detached brace for the funncl-shafmd mouthpiece, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a gripping member detached from the body portion whereby the free ends of the arms of the member are allowed to spring apart.
A combined lock and guard in accordance with this invcntion comprises a conicalshapcd hollow body 1 having the lower end thereof reduced to provide an annular seat 2, said body terminating in a hollow knob 3 containing a piece of cork 4- or other yieldable nmterial. Mounted upon the seat 2 in the lower end of the body 1 is a resilient gripping member comprising oppositely disposed arms 5 and 6 with the arms 6 disposed atright angles to the arms 5 and of a less length than said arms. The lower erids of said arms are formed integral with each other and the upper diverging ends of said. arms are bent to provide oppositely disposed gripping teeth 7 adapted to frictionally epgage the shank 8 of a hatpin placed int 1e body 1 between the arms 5 and 6. The outer part of the body 1 engages the arms 5 and 6 so as to force them together whereby the teeth 7 will be caused to fr-ictionally engage the shank 8 of the pin when said shank is passed between the aims. The point 9 of the pin extends through a small opening 10 provided therefor at the base of the gripping member, said point extend; ing into the piece of cork 4. I
The upper flared end of the bodyifli provided with a funnel-shaped mouthpiece 11 to guide the shank of the pin into t e body 1 and between the arms 5 and 6. tThe lower end of the mouthpiece 11 extends in proximity to the upper ends of the arms 6 and this end of the mouthpiece is held by a horizontal brace 12'ha'ving resilient arms 13 frictionally engaging the inner walls of the body 1 and holding the brace in position, whereby the mouthpiece will be concentric to the body 1. The outer edges of the fun ncl-shaped mouthpiece 11 are reamed upon the upper edges of the body 1, as at 14:, whereby the funnel-shaped mouthpiece cannot become accidentally displaced.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the device will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention. it is to be understood that the device can be made of any desired material and of various sizes.
\Vhat I claim is A hatpin protector comprising a conicalshaped hollow body having the lower end thereof reduced to provide a seat, a gripping mcmber arranged upon said seat and having oppositely disposed arms with some of said arms of a greater length than the 1 other arms and the upper ends of said arms In testimony whereof I aflix my signature bent toprovideteeth adapted to grip a hatin the presence of two Witnesses. \pin placed in said body, a funnel-shaped mouthpiece carried by the upper end of said FRANK REICHEN EACH 5 body, and'a horizontal brace arranged in Witnesses: v
