To all w/mm it may concern Be it known that I, Inn A. SoULn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San lirancisco, in the county of San l rancisco, State of California, have invented certain new and llStitlll Improvements in lint-Pin- IPoint Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a device to be placed upon the point of a hat pin, after the same has been passed through the crown of a hat, and has for its object to constructa device of this character which may be readily attached to and detached from the pin point.

A further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character of tow parts, thereby producing an article that may be manufactured cheaply.

A still further object of the invention is to manufacture devices ot this character which are m'nan'iental, and not only prevent the loss of the pin, but will prevent injury ot? persons coming in contact with the same.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1. designates a casing. said casing being formed from metal, and being tapered throughout its length, thereby producing a bore 2 having tapered. walls. The casing 1 is open at both ends, one of said ends being beveled as at 3 of the drawing, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. Adapted to be placed within the casing it is a plate spring t, said spring being bent so as to term a looped head 5, and has its remaining portions 6 arranged in parallel relation and bowed toward each other and in contacting relation. The extreme ends 7 of the por tions 6 are flared outwardly, and out of contact and assume a position in one end of the casing inward of its end. The plate spring 4t is also tapered to correspond to the tapered formation of the bore 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 0f the drawing, so that it may tit within the bore, yet permit the arm portions (3 to be sprung away from each other sntliciently to allow the end of the pin to be inserted and clasped therehetween. A cap 8, having an inner beveled surface 9 is placed upon the casing so as the beveled taco thcreot will engage the beveled edge ot the casing It, and may be either soldered or held in position upon the casing 1 by :triction. These caps may be ornamented to 't'orln an attractive device.

The resilient nature ot the spring t and its tapered iliormation will at all times hold the same within the casing, thereby preventing any rattling of the parts.

in assembling a device the spring 4; is inserted into the bore 52 until the head engages the upper end thereot in spaced relation to the upper terminal. The upper end ot the casing is then erimped inwardly to produce the beveled portion 3 which ongages the head ot the said spring and prevents its displacement.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that l have produced a device ot this character which is formed in a simple mare ner and comprises three parts, said parts being easily assembled, and the casing and cap ornamented in any manner, and when in position not only adds to the attinctiveness, but prevents loss of the pin, and also protects the person aeeidentally coming in contact with the same. i

The operation ot? the device is as follows: Atter the hat pin has been inserted through the crown of the hat, the device is forced upon the pointed end thereof, until said point has contact ed with the inner side of the loop, and the plate spring has engaged the pin at the point where the portions 6 normally contact, thereby being firmly secured to the pin.

lVhat is claimed, is:

As a new article of manufacture, a pin protector comprising a tapered casing open at both ends, one of said ends being inclined inward, the casing providing a tapered bore extending substantially the length thereof, a cap for one end of the casing, a tapered spring mounted within the bore and prevented from moving longitudinally in one direction by the inwardly inclined end of the casing and in the other direction by the tapered walls of the bore, said spring being so bent as to provide a looped member, the remaining portions of the spring being bowed toward each other to normally contact, the ends of the spring being flared outwardly and the contacting portions of the spring being moved away from each other by the action of the pin pushed therebetween.
