GODFREY P. SCHMIDT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY P. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in tops and has particular reference to a top adapted to spin for a considerable length of time although some of the modifications may be applied to an ordinary form of top.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a top illustrating one application of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the lines 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification of my invention, and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the finger piece or knob after it has been stamped out and before it has been completely formed. Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 99 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 illustrates the knob or finger piece of the top after it has been formed in the shape in which it appears upon the top.
11 is a suitable base preferably provided with a cavity or recess 12 in the top to receive the peg or point such as 13 of the top. This peg is preferably secured within a disk or washer such as 14 as shown, its upper extremity being seated within the top or central portion 15 of the cap or finger piece shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 7. This cap or finger piece is preferably stamped out of a flat piece of material in the shape shown in Fig. 5, the three legs or divisions being preferably crinkled or corrugated in cross section as shown in Fig. 6 and provided with project-ions or lips 16 so that when the finger piece is formed the projections 16 may be introduced through suitable slots or openings in the top disk 17 of the top and may be bent under the same thereby securely fastening the finger piece in position and the pin or peg mounted therein. As an additional security for the pin or peg 13 the disk 17 is also provided with the small central flared hole 18 through which the tapered Specification of Letters Patent.

portion of the pin or peg projects. The top disk or body portion of the top may then be provided with a suitable fly weight such as 19 which is shown in the form of an iron ring or the same may be formed rectangular in cross section as indicated by the reference character 20 in Fig. 4. YVhen the round iron ring is used the outer margin of the disk is bent beneath and around the same as shown but when the rectangular ring is used the edge of the outer disk or sheet may be bent around as shown.
Of course it will be understood that various other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims.
I claim:
1. A rotatable device of the character described having a body portion and a finger piece for rotating the same, said finger piece having stamped metal portions with pro j ections and a central portion, a peg adapted to pass between said projections and to be secured between said central portion and the body portion of said device, and said projections being adapted to interlock with said body portion.
2. A rotatable device of the character described having a body portion and a finger piece for rotating the same, said finger piece having stamped metal portions with projections and a central portion, a peg projecting below said body portion, and means in combination with said peg for holding the same in position.
3. A top comprising a weighted rimmed disk having a peg in the center and a finger piece around said peg, said finger piece having sectional walls joined at the top and adapted to engage said disk at the bottom, a washer in said finger piece engaging said peg, the top of said peg seated in the top of said finger piece, and the point of said peg partially through said disk.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GODFREY P. SCHMIDT. Witnesses LOUISE ENDERLE, THOMAS A. HILL.
