To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK B. HENDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Tables for Instruments and the like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to tables and the like, and has for its primary object the provision of an improved device of this char acter wherein a glass top is firmly secured to and upheld by ametallic support.

Vfith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists substantially in the combination, arrangement, and construction of parts, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings which form a part of this specification and illustrate the preferredembodiment of my invention, and more specifically set forth in the subjoined claims.

Reference numeral 10 indicates generally the top of my improved table and is constructed of glass or other similar frangible material which may be easily rendered antiseptic. The top is surrounded by an upright flange 11, notched as at 12, the notches 12 receiving instruments laid upon the table and preventing their movement regardless of the movement of the table. A plurality of ridges 13 is formed upon the top of the table, the ridges extending from a point adjacent the center thereof to a point adjacent the edge. Preferably these ridges 13 are three in number, two being in line with each other and the third at right angles to the others. These ridges 13 are notched as at 14: for reception of instruments and are preferably of a height somewhat less than the height of the flange 11. Being composed of frangible material, it is essential that the top 10 be formed with a minimum of sharp corners or edges which would be easily chipped or broken by contact with instruments inadvertently struck against them. and 5.) The top 10 is preferably given a circular contour.

A downward extension 16 is formed upon the lower side of the top 10 and is preferably annular. For convenience in removing the top from the mold in which it is cast-if made of glassthe peripheral surface of the extension 16 is beveled as at 17 (see Figs. 3 and 4:). The table top is carried upon a branched support 18, upon the ends of the branches 19 of which is formed a band 20 of metal surrounding the extension 16, but slightlyspaced therefrom. A layer 21 of elastic cement fills the space between the extension 16 and the band 20 and joins the top 10 securely to the support 18. By reason of the elastic character of the cement layer 21 undue pressure upon the frangible exten sion 16 by the band 20 is avoided and the extension protected from breaking. The support 18 a is vertically apertured preferably below the center point. of the top 10, as at 22, and a pin 23 bearing a spindle 24 positioned in the aperture 22 maintains the table in an upright position and permits rotation thereof. The pin 23 may be upheld in any desired manner.

I claim! 1. The combination ofa table top, a downwardly tapering extension upon the lower sidethereof, a support for the top provided with a band having a vertically disposed inner wall spaced from the extension, and a layer of elastic cement securing the band to the extension. 1 v

The combination of a table top formed of frangible material, a downwardly tapering extension of frangible material formed upon the lower side thereof, a support for the table top, a metallic band having a vertical inner wall surrounding the extension in spaced relation thereto, and a layer of elasticcement between the band and the extension securing them together.
