To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Jol-1N E. FITZGERALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements l in Finger- Rings, of which the ollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyin@ drawings.

Figure 1 is an elevation -of a finger ring provided with my improvement hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is a top view of said finger ring with my improved signet plate secured therein. My invention relates to that class of finger rings provided with a `box orhead in which a signet plate is detachably mounted; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of the several parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings the `linger ring is designated by the reference numeral 1 and may be of any desired form and style. The finger ring has a box or head 2, which may be oval, square, or of any preferred shape. The box or head 2 preferably has the annularor external surrounding flange or bezel 3, whose 1' outer edge lies in one plane throughout its The inner surfacev of thel entire extent.
flange or bezel 3 tapers conically, as shown in Figs. 10 and 14. An integral ledge or annular seat 4 extends inwardly all around the `box or head 2, adjacent to the base of the flange or bezel 3. A hole or aperture 5 is made centrally through the bottom of the box or head 2.
Two blocks 6 and 7 are soldered or otherwise secured within the box or head 2, as best represented in Fig. 9, and separately illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12. Each of said blocks has a slot 8 (or 9), whose inner end is closed and whose sides diverge outwardly. The block 7 is not so high as the block 6 and is provided near its end with two integral studs 10, which extend up from its upper surface. The slots 8 and 9 of the blocks 6 and 7 are opposite each other and extend in the line of the major diameter of the box or head 2. The block 6 extends up nearer to the ledge 4 than the block 74 does, so that the slot 8 has a closed top and rear end, whereas the slot 9 has a closed rear end, but an open top.
There are two locking bars 11 and 12,each made of tempered metal having a good degree of resilience. Each locking bar has a central semi-circular portion or bow-shaped bend 13 (or 14) pro]ecting from its outer side, and a concentric semi-circular concavity or socket 15 of less diameter than the projecting portion 13 (or 14) of said bar. Each bar is, at and as far as said projections, rectangular in cross section, and has its inner surface 16 straight. The two locking bars 11 and 12 are placed together with their respective inner surfaces 16 in contact, as illustrated in Fig. 8, and then the two concavities 15 form a circular hole or opening as seen at 15a. The inner portion of the bow or bend 13 of each locking bar is concentrically beveled, or .made with a conical taper, as seen at 17. There is such a tapering both on the upper portion and the lower portion of each locking bar, the latter forming aconical concavity designated as 173L in Fig. 7, and this leaves a sharp annular ridge, or central circumferential enlargement, as indicated by 18 in said figure.
The locking bars v11 and l2 when placed together, as in Fig. 8, are seated at their ends in the slots 8 and 9, respectively, and so are prevented from longitudinal movement in the box or head 2, although by the outwardly tapering shape of the slots 8 and 9 Q said bars have room for a slight lateral movement. The slots 8 and 9, however, at their inner or closed ends, are equal in width to the widt-h of the bars 411 and l2, when. they are in the position shown in F ig. 8, so that said bars at their extreme ends, when so in engagement in said slots, have no lateral play whatever.
