- This invention relates to buttons used on all wearing apparel, and has for its primary object the provision of improvements and refinements of construction which will permit of the housing and protecting of the attaching thread to preclude the same from being worn by friction against the sides of the button hole with which it is used.

Application filed. November This invention relates to buttons used on all wearing apparel, and has for its primary object the provision of improvements and refinements of construction which will permit of the housing and protecting of the attaching thread to preclude the same from being worn by friction against the sides of the button hole with which it is used.
Another object of this invention is to provide a button which may be used to an advantage wherever buttons are required, and which is constructed in a novel manner to protect the attaching thread from the friction caused by the button hole.
An even further object is the contemplation of a button having means for protecting the attaching thread and the sidesv of the button hole which is cheap and easy to make, strong and durable and may be constructed of any desired material.
Further and minor objects will appear during the course of the detailed specification referring to the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a button constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is another plan view with the thread engaging member removed to show the annular flange of the tubular shank.

With reference at this time to the accompanying drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 6 designates the body of the improved button which of the conventional circular type, but which may be made in any shape. The body is formed to present an annular cavity 7 extending below the top thereof and which joins opening 8, passing through the body 6 at the axis or center thereof.
The protecting shank may be formed integrally with the body 6, but is preferably constructed as shown to be a separate piece having a tubular body 9 around the upper end of which is disposed an annular outturned flange 10, which engages the bottom of cavity 7 to preclude its being pulled through opening 8 after the body thereof has been passed therethrough.

lar shank 9 has been placed by passing its annular body through opening 8, thread engaging member 12 is fitted into cavity 7 and against the top of the annular out-turned flange 9. Any number of thread passages 13 passing through member 12 and parallel to the axis of shank 9 may be provided. They all must open within the inner periphcry of shank 9 to allow free passage of the attaching thread.
lVhen assembled, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the parts of the improved button are tightly fitted together. The member 12 is secured in cavity 7.
The various novel features are obvious, the advantages of having the button attaching thread within shank 9 where it will not be rubbed are many. The shank is used for both the necessary neck for the button and to protect the thread against friction caused by the button hole. It is evident the invention is a decided forward step in the art. v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A button comprising a body, a cavity formed in the top of said body, an opening formed centrally of said body and communicating with said cavity, a tubular shank passing through said opening, a pcripheral outturned flange inte ral with that end of the shank within said cavity and a thread engaging member fitting into said cavity against said shank, said cavity having a lower portion adjacent said opening adapted to receive said flange whereby the bottom of said thread engaging member lies directly against the bottom of said cavity around the flange of the tubular shank.
2. In a button of the class described, a body member, a cavity formed within said member, an opening passing through said member from the bottom of said cavity and an annular groove in the bottom of said cavity around the edge formed by the meeting of said cavity bottom and opening sides.
3. A button comprising a body, a cav ity formed by the body, a thread engaging member adapted to fit into the cavity formed by said body, an opening formed by the body passing therethrough from the bottom of said cavity and a hollow shank extending through the opening formed by said body and ext-ending a distance therefrom, said hollow shank having an annular flange disposed between said thread engaging member and said body; whereby when the button is sew-ed to material by passing threads through said hollow shank and through the thread engaging member the same is held spaced from the material.
4. A button comprising a body having an annular cavity formed in the top thereof, an opening also formed by said body extending therethrough and in axial alinementwith said cavity andbody, a tubular shank having an annular outtnrned flange at one end thereof adapted to pass through said opening with said flange resting on the bottom of said cavity and a thread engaging member fitting into said cavity and against the top of the flange of said tubular shank, said thread engaging member having a plurality of openings therethrough and in communication with said tubular shank.
