CLOTH-COVERED BUTTON HAVING AN ATTACHMENT EYE Filed Nov. 26, 1965 United States Patent 14,276/64 US. Cl. 24-113 Int. Cl. A44b 1/12; B68f 7/00 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A covered button particularly utilizable for furniture and provided with an attachment loop in which a body portion having a concavo-convex surface is provided with a flange or rim portion extending perpendicularly therefrom and over which flange or rim the covering material is positioned and folded inwardly .with such covering material being held in proper position within the body portion by a tension plate forced into the body portion. The attachement loop extends substantially perpendicularly from the concave surface of the body portion and passes through an aperture provided in the tension plate. The tension plate is shaped to provide an outwardly tapering surface and an inwardly tapering surface, with the outwardly tapering surface coacting with the rim or flange portion to maintain the material between the edge of the tension plate and the flange.
This invention relates to covered buttons provided with attachment means, and more particularly to covered buttons for use with articles of furniture.
Generally speaking, the present button comprises a cup-shaped body having a concavo-convex surface and a flange or rim extending therefrom preferably fabricated from metal, and about the flange of which the desired covering material is positioned and folded inwardly and with such material being maintained in proper position by means of a tension plate forced into the interior of the cup-shaped body and with the attachment means extending from the concave surface and passing through an aperture formed in the tension plate.
At present, in buttons of this type the tension plate is provided with a raised edge in the main cylindrical toothed rim portion thereof, with the teeth being pressed directly against the inner surface of the cup, thereby holding the covering material against the inner surface. Simultaneously, the aperture or hole in the center of the tension plate is provided with lugs so that the tension plate can be pressed against the outside of and from a post extending from the center and provided with an attachment loop. in this manner, the tension plate is held against the post, but there is the problem that the tension plate will be improperly urged inwardly so that the covering material will be insufliciently maintained between the teeth of the rim portion and the inner surface of the cup. Moreover, the maintenance at the post is not proper, since the circumference of the post is relatively small as compared with the circumference of the outer rim of the up.
By virtue of this invention, the above and other drawbacks are completely avoided if so constructed and am ranged, as the tension plate is to be pressed within the flange or rim portion of the cup-shaped body which is defined in the main cylindrical surface, thereby maintaining the covering material between the peripheral edge of the tension plate and the flange or rim portion.
Additional important objects and advantages of the present invention will become more readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from the ensuing detailed description and annexed drawings, and in which drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the cup-shaped body embodying the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a view taken along the line IIII of FIGURE 1, the view looking in the direction of the arrows,
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of the tension plate of the present invention,
FIGURE 4 is a view taken along the line IVIV of FIGURE 3, the view looking in the direction of the arrows,
FIGURE 5 is a side view partly in elevation and partly in cross-section of a covered button, and
FIGURE 6 is a fragmentary view illustrating a modified form of attachment loop carried by the cup-shaped body.
The cup shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 includes a concaveconvex body 1 provided with a cylindrical flange or rim portion 2. A post 3 extends from the center of the concave surface of the cup-shaped body and constitutes an attachement loop 4 at its outermost end.
A tension plate 5 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 is shaped with an outer outwardly tapering surface portion 6 extending from the outer circular unbroken edge of the plate and an inner tapering surface portion 7 which terminates in an aperture or hole 9.
When a button is to be covered, material 8 is placed against the convex surface of the cup-shaped body and the edge portions are folded inwardly over the flange or rim, as indicated on FIG. 5. Thereafter, the tension plate is pressed into the cup-shaped body with the hole 9 receiving the attachment loop 4. Hence,.the outer por tions of the material as folded inwardly are squeezed or grasped between the inner surface of the flange 2 as mentioned above and the outer edge of the tapering portion 6 of the tension plate.
The necessary elasticity will thus be obtained from the material as well as from the double tapered surfaces of the tension plate. As the tension plate is not serrated, the material will not be torn, but regardless thereof, the tension plate Will be securely held in the cup-shaped body.
As the strain falls on the cup-shaped body and not on the tension plate, the plate may be readilywithdrawn from the cup-shaped body.
FIG. 6 shows a modification of the attachment loop, in which the loop is defined by a U-shaped clamp having both of its legs 10 attached to the concave surface of the cup-shaped body such as, for instance by welding or riveting.
This invention is not to be confined to any strict conformity to the showings in the drawings but changes or modifications may be made therein so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. A button for furniture and kindred items comprising a body having a concavo-convex base and a cylindrical flange therefor, a stem extending centrally from the concave surface of the base and provided with an attachment means at the free end thereof located beyond said cylindrical flange, a covering material overlying the convex surface of the base, the outer surface of the flange and inturned along the inner surface of the flange, and a tension plate having an aperture therein of suflicient dimensions to receive said stem and attachment means insertable into said body for securing said covering material to said body, said tension plate including an outer outwardly tapered surface terminating in a circular planar edge and an inner inwardly tapered surface terminating in a circular planar edge defining the aperture in said tension plate, said circular planar edge of said inwardly tapered surface being of such length as to be located within said cylindrical flange when said tension plate is inserted into said body and said circular planar edge of said outer outwardly tapered surface gripping the inturned portion of the covering material between the periphery thereof and the inner surface of the flange for securing the material to the body.
2. The button as claimed in claim 1 in which said tension plate is V-shaped in cross-section.
