BUTTON.
Application filed July 19, 1921. Serial No. 485,911.
, To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIZABETH M. ErnrHENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in garment buttons and has as its general object to provide a button which will not require to be sewn to the garment and which may be readily and quickly applied and detached when necessary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a button of the class above mentioned which, when adapted to a garment, will be securely held in place thereon and firmly anchored and which will not be liable to cause any injury to the garment or a dis tortion of the same.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a button embodying the present invention, the two members thereof being relatively separated;

The button embodying the present invention comprises a head indicated in general by the numeral 1 and a base indicated in general by the numeral 2. The head 1 may be of solid or hollow construction and in one integral piece or composed of a number of assembled parts, and likewise it may be of any dimensions and any desired shape and ornamented in any preferred manner. The head 1 is however in any event provided with a shank which is indicated in general by the numeral 3 and this shank is preferably formed from a suitable length of resilient wire of suniciently heavy gage and is anchored at one end, as at 4:, to the back of the button head 1 at the center thereof. From its anchored end 4 the shank 8 extends, for a short distance, axially from the back of the button :head 1, this portion of the shank beingindicated by the numeral 5, and from this portion theshank is curved outwardly as at 6 and thence in the form or a helix as at 7, the terminal of the shank being located close to and opposite the bend between the portions 6 and 7 and being sharpened to a piercing point, as indicated by the numeral 8. In this manner there is provided a substantially circular coil which is positioned in a plane spaced from the back of the button head 1, and it will be understood that the head may be assembled with the garment at the proper point of location of the button, by passing the pierc ing point 8 of the shank through the material of the garment and rotating the but ton until the portion 5 of the button shank has become engaged in the opening pierced by the point 8.
The button back 2, in that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, is of hollow lenticular form, comprising concavo-convex sides 9 and 10 marginally united. The side 9 of the button base 2 is formed centrally with an opening indicated by the numeral 11 and of a size to more or less snugly receive the shank of the head 1, and after the button head 1 has been assembled with the garment by threading the shank through the material of the garment, the point 8 of the shank is engaged in the opening 11 and the head and base are relatively rotated until the shank has entered the base through the opening 11, and the portion 5 of the shank has be come seated in said opening as illustrated in Figures 2 and 8 or the drawing. The said portion 5 of the shank is preferably sufficiently short so that when the coil of the shank is introduced into the base'2, the coil will bear snugly against the inner side of the side member 9 of the base and be slightly distorted from a plane, the resiliency of the shank serving to maintain the parts in firm contact. In other words, while the coil of the shank will normally occupy a plane or be substantially fiat, when the coil is introduced into the base of the button, it will be sprung slightly from this plane through its engagement against the concaved or curved surface of the wall or side 9 of the base 2.
In that form of the invention shown in Figure 4 of the drawing, the structure is the same as in the previously described form with the exception that the base is in this case, indicated by the numeral 12, being formed from a disk blank of sheet material stamped so as to provide a recessed back 13 to house the coil of the button shank.
In that form of the invention shown in Figure of the drawings, the base which is indicated by the numeral 14, is formed centrally with an opening 15 corresponding to the opening 11, and the said base is also formed, radially to this opening, with a slot 16. By this construction the spiral shank of the button head may be'more readily enaged with the base than in the previously described form.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A button comprising a head, a base having a central opening, and a shank proje'cting from the center of the back of the head and thence directed outwardly and formed in a single coil and having its terminal pointed and located relatively close to the bend between its outwardly extending and coiled portion, the said shank being 'engag'eable through the opening in the base with the coil resting against the inner side of the base.
2. A.v button comprising a head, a base having a central opening, and a shank projecting from the center of the back of the head and thence formed in a substantially flat resilient coil engageable through the opening in the base, the said base having a concave surface against which the coil is to bear and by which it is distorted from its fiat plane when engaged through the said opening.
