United ritates Patent G" 3,045,309 FASTENING DEVICE Frank E. Johnson, Sr., Wilmington, Mass., assignor to Umted-Carr Fastener Corporation, Cambridge, Mass, a corporation of Delaware Filed Dec. 30, 1959, Ser. No. 862,976 1 Claim. (Cl. 24-216) At present, the pearl material is held within a metal frame of some geometric form, which frame detracts from the aesthetic value of the pearl as well as increasing cost.
Other objects of the invention will, in part, be obvious, and will, in part, appear hereinafter.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the button engaged with a prong ring;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the button before it is engaged with a pronged ring;
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the button partially engaged with a prong ring;
FIG. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 3.
In the drawing there is shown a decorative fastener part 2 formed of some type of plastic or imitation pearl material, such as nylon, synpearl, salt or fresh water pearl or the like. The said decorative fastener part 2 cornprises a base portion 4 in the form of a disk whose circumference 6 is arced to converge at a point outside the area enclosed by said base portion 4 to form a neck portion 8. Thesaid neck portion 8 has a diameter less than said base portion 4 and is integral with said base portion 4. A dome shaped cap 10 is in integral relationship with said neck portion 8 and in spaced relationship with said base port-ion 4. The said cap 10 has a diameter greater than said base portion 4, so that from a view taken above said cap 10, both the neck portion 8 and the base portion 4 are not visible. From a side elevation, the edge profile of the base portion 4 and the neck portion 8 is the form of a reverse curve, as shown in FIG. 2, with the concave portion adjacent the cap 10 and the convex portion at base portion 4.
A pronged ring 12 comprising gripping tangs 14 in right angle'integral relationship with a base ring 16 and a set of support engaging prongs 18. The said prongs 18 are triangular in form, having a terminal end 20 in the shape of. an angle less than 90. The pronged ring 12 is old in the fastener art and is adapted to pierce a piece of material. The gripping tangs 14 are adapted to engage the button."
To engage the decorative fastener part 2 and the pronged ring 12, the base portion 4 is placed in abutting relationship with the base ring 16 within the area formed by the gripping tangs '14, as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.
3,045,309 Patented July 24, 1962 FIG. 3 illustrates the fact that the support engaging prongs 18, at this stage, remain in right angle relationship with the base ring 12. The support engaging prongs 18 may now be passed through a support 22 until the base ring 12 rests against the said support 22. A socket 24 having a retaining portion which may be in the form of a curled lip 28, as illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawing and also disclosed in the patent to J. Blazej, US. Patent No. 2,262,442, can be engaged with the support engaging prongs 118 by driving the support engaging prongs 18 into the recess formed by the curled lip 28, as shown in FIG. 4. The support 22 may be of any fabric, such as wool, nylon, silk or cotton. A dished area may be formed in the base portion 4 of the decorative part 2 to accommodate some of the-support material 22 when the socket is engaged with a stud.
When the decorative fastener part 2 is viewed looking in an axial direction at the cap 10, the only portion visible to the eye is the cap 10 as shown in FIG. 1. To the applicants knowledge, there is no decorative fastener part presently available commercially which discloses a decorative snap fastener attaching device where the decorative fastener part 2 is not enclosed in some form of visible frame. The frame is objectionable in many applications because it detracts aesthetically from the decorative fastener part; also, it may reduce the launderability of the garment. Of some importance is the fact that, although applicants decorative fastener part does not require a frame in the usual sense of the word, it is still attachable by use of automatic attaching machines.
Since certain other obvious modifications may be made in this device Without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter containedherein be interpreted in an illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
A decorative snap fastener attaching device comprising, in combination, an attaching member having a cup-shaped portion and attaching means for attaching the device to a snap fastener member and a decorative insert, said cup-shaped portion having a wall, said Wall being formed of gripping tangs in spaced relation with each other, said decorative insert having a cap portion and an annular holding portion having an edge profile in the form of a reverse curve thoughout its circumferential surface providin g a concave neck portion and a convex base portion, said engaging tangs being disposed in superposed abutting relationship with the convex base portion, said cap portion being of larger diameter than said holding portion and said cup-shaped portion so that it overlies them and conceals them when viewed from the top and when said device is in attached position.
