SAFETY PIN This invention relates to a safety pin, and more particularly to a safety pin for holding a badge, a brooch, and the like, and more particularly to a safety pin comprising a body made of plastic material and capable of carrying an ornamental article, a pin member having a mounting arm and a pointed needle connected to the mounting arm through a coiled spring, and a hook projection secured to said body, said pin being fastened to said body by fastening the mounting arm to the body in such a manner that the pointed needle is selectively engag eable with said hook projection while being resiliently swingable about the coiled spring.
A typical conventional safety pin comprises a unitary resilient wire which is coiled at an intermediate portion thereof, while forming a pointed needle at one end thereof and a cooperating holding arm extending from said pointed needle substantially in parallel with said needle, said holding arm having a hook at the end opposite to said coiled portion so as to selectively hold the pointed end of said needle for making a closed loop. Such conventional safety pin is attached to a cloth or other soft sheet material by inserting the pointed needle into the cloth or sheet from one surface thereof and passing back the pointed tip of the needle through the cloth or sheet so as to cause it to engage with the hook at the corresponding end of the holding arm. Both the needle and the mounting arm of the conventional safety pin are slippery, and users are often injured by the pointed tip of the slipped needle thereof.
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a safety pin which a user can securely and safety handle with his fingers, so as to mitigate the aforesaid difficulty of the conventional safety pin.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a safety pin comprising a plastic body of easily manipulatable shape and an elongated loop-shaped pin having a coiled portion at one end thereof and a selectively openable portion at the opposite end thereof. The plastic body has a notch for receiving said coiled portion of the pin in a freely swayable manner.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a safety pin in which the mounting arm of an elongated loop-shaped metallic pin is embedded in and securely fastened to a plastic body, so that the metallic pin having a pointed needle can safety be handled by holding the plastic body with the fingers. With the plastic body of the aforesaid construction, the risk of slipping the metallic pin from the fingers and injuring the hands by the slipped pin is greatly reduced. By applying an attractive design to the plastic body, the commercial and aesthetic value of the safety pin can be improved.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention may be appreciated by referring to the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a safety pin, according to the present invention, shownwhere a metallic pin is' mounted on a plastic body but before fastening the former to the latter;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1, wherein the metallic pin is fastened to the plastic body;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of FIG.2;
FIG.4 is a schematic elevation of a needle holding portion of the plastic'body;

In a first embodiment of the present invention, as shown in FIGS. l,to 5, a metallic pin 1 to be fastened to a preferably non-slip plastic body 6, includes an intermediate coiled portion 2, a resilient pointed needle 3 extending from said coiled portion, and a mounting arm 5 extending from the coiled portion substantially parallel with said pointed needle. An end portion 4 of the mounting arm 5 opposite to the coiled portion 2 is bent in a plane substantially perpendicular to another plane defined by the pointed needle 3 and the non-bent portion of the mounting arm 5.
The plastic'body 6 is generally a half egg shaped solid member, with a flat oval base surface and a convex top surface. An oval recess is formed on the base surface, which recess is surrounded by a rim 7. The plastic body 6 has a coil-receiving projection 8 and a hook projection 9 located at opposite ends of the long axis of the oval base, so as to extent at right angles to the base against the top surface, as shown in FIG.1. The coilreceiving projection 8 has an open groove 10 into which the coiled portion 2 of the metallic pin 1 is loosely inserted.
Referring to FIG.4, the hook projection 9 of the plastic body 6 has an inlet opening 11 flush with the upper end surface of the rim means 7, and the inner end of the inlet opening 11 is bent so as to define a hook for holding the needle 3. That wall surface of the inlet opening 11 which is coplanar with the upper end surface of the rim 7 acts as a guide surface 13 for the needle 3 (see FIG.4).'An oval bottom surface 12 of the recess surrounded by the rim 7 has an arm-receiving groove, which groove is so shaped as to receive both the mounting arm 5 and its bent portion 4 of the metallic pin 1, as shown by dotted lines of FIG.3.
In assembling the safety pin, the mounting arm 5 and its bent portion 4 of the metallic pin 1 is fitted in the arm-receiving groove of the recess bottom surface 12, while loosely inserting the coiled portion 2 in the open groove 10 of the coil-receiving projection 8. Then, a plastic cover 14 is fitted in the recess surrounded by the rim 7, and the cover 14 is fastened to the plastic body 6 by a suitable means, e.g., by adhesive.
In a second embodiment of the invention, as shown in FIGS.6 to 10, the pin 1 has the arm 5 which includes zig-zag bent portions 15. The mounting arm 5 is placed on a flat bottom surface 12 of an oval recess on the base of the plastic body 6. The oval recess is surrounded by the rim 7, as in the case of the first embodiment which has been described in detail by referring to FIGS.1 to 5. The bent portions 15 of the mounting arm 5 thus laid on the bottom surface 12 are fastened to the plastic body 6 by the cover 14 which is secured to the body 6 by a suitable means, e.g., by adhesive.
Instead of using the hook projection 9 integrally formed with the plastic body 6, a suitable hook member (not shown) may be formed at the end of the mounting arm 5 of the metallic pin opposite to the coiled portion 2, so that the hook member projects from the base surface of the body 6 when the metallic pin is fastened to the body 6 by the cover 14.
The plastic body 6 and the cover 14, as illustrated in the figures, may be of any shape as long as it can safety hold the metallic pin 1. For instance, an ornament article, such as a badge, a medal, or decorative brooch, may be used for holding the metallic pin 1 in the aforesaid manner.
Although the present invention has been described with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure has been made only by way of example and that various changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the end, and a mounting arm extending from said coiled portion substantially parallel with said needle, defining therewith a common plane; said mounting arm including a portion bent sideways out of said common plane; an elongated plastic body having a substantially flat recessed base surface and a coil-receiving projection formed at one end thereof; a plastic cover fitted on said base surface so as to hold firmly said mounting arm and said bent portion thereof between said body and said cover; and a hook projection disposed at the opposite end of said body so as to selectively hold said tip end of the needle; wherien said hook projection is integrally formed with said body and made of the same plastic material.
2. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said body and said cover are made of a non-slip plastic material.
3. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said bent portion of the mounting arm is at the end of the latter, substantially perpendicular to said common plane.
4. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said bent portion of the mounting arm is constituted by at least two zig-zag bent sections.

Claims (4)

1. A safety pin comprising: a metallic pin including an intermediate coiled portion, a pointed resilient needle extending from said coiled portion and having a tip end, and a mounting arm extending from said coiled portion substantially parallel with said needle, defining therewith a common plane; said mounting arm including a portion bent sideways out of said common plane; an elongated plastic body having a substantially flat recessed base surface and a coil-receiving projection formed at one end thereof; a plastic cover fitted on said base surface so as to hold firmly said mounting arm and said bent portion thereof between said body and said cover; and a hook projection disposed at the opposite end of said body so as to selectively hold said tip end of the needle; wherien said hook projection is integrally formed with said body and made of the same plastic material.
2. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said body and said cover are made of a non-slip plastic material.
3. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said bent portion of the mounting arm is at the end of the latter, substantially perpendicular to said common plane.
4. The safety pin as defined in claim 1, wherein said bent portion of the mounting arm is constituted by at least two zig-zag bent sections.
