ISIDO'R HEIDENREICH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed September 8, 1914. Serial No. 860,695.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isrnon HEIDENREIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and ex act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to toy tops.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a top extremely simple in its construction, having no parts liable to become broken, and one that is easily and readily spun without the use of strings or other extraneous appliances.
Further objects of my invention are to provide such a top that serves not only as a source of amusement but as an effective advertising medium as well; and to provide a top of the character described, the parts of which are manufactured so cheaply and assembled so readily and quickly that the top is produced with a high degree of economy.
Additional objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following specification taken in connection with the appended claims.
A top constructed in accordance with my invention is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the axis of the top. A
Referring to the drawing, the top comprises, in the main, a stem or spindle and a flat disk held thereon in a plane at right angles thereto.
The spindle 3 is formed out of suitable metal and at its lower end it is roughly tapered to form a spinning point as shown at 1. Associated with the spindle and preferably integral therewith is a shoulder 5 having a substantially flat upper face. On this shoulder rests the disk 6. The body portion of the latter is a flat, round piece of metal 7 having its edge turned down and bent inwardly back upon itself to form a flange 8. The body portion 7 is covered with a similarly shaped piece of paper 9 on which advertising matter may be printed and this in turn is covered with a thin transparent layer 10 of celluloid, the edges of the paper and celluloid being turned inwardly about the flange 8. Embraced within the latter and fitting snugly therein is a button 11 of pasteboard or other suitable material. The whole forms a flat round disk having a rounded edge and it is suitably perforated for the passage of the spindle 3.
The disk 6 is retained in place on the spindle by means of a collet 12 of brass or other suitable material having integral with its lower end a shoulder or collar 13. This collet fits firmly on the spindle so that it is held thereon by the friction of contact and the collar or shoulder 13 clamps the disk between the same and the shoulder 5 of the spindle.
The top is readily spun by giving a twisting or spinning motion to the spindle 3 with the fingers.
It will be seen that the parts are few and of the simplest kind, requiring no complicated machinery or great expense to manufacture. The various parts of the disk are readily assembled and then it is only necessary to place the disk on the spindle and slip the collet into place and the top is ready for use.
Changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims, the form of the invention herein disclosed being merely one preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy top comprising a spindle having a pair of shoulders associated therewith, and a rigid disk, a covering'for said disk on which advertising matter may be printed, and a transparent celluloid cover for said disk covering, all clamped between said shoulders.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a toy top comprising a spindle having a pair of shoulders associated therewith, and a rigid disk having a downturned flange, a covering for said disk on which advertising matter may be printed, and a transparent celluloid cover for said disk covering, all clamped between said shoulders.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a toy braced Within said flange, clamped between said shoulders.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
ISIDOR HEIDENREICH.
Witnesses:
W. PERRY HAHN, ANNE SoLoMoN.
