F. S. NELSON. $EPARABLB BUTTON. No. 532,284. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.-
WITNESSESLM INVENTOR BY lzzwqz ATTORNEY5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK s. NELSON, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SEPARABLE BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part 6f Letters Patent NO. 532,284, dated January .8, 1895. Applidation filed April 26,1894. Serial No. 509,067. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRIOK S. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a separable button for fastening collars, cuffs, and other articles, of simple, strong and durable construction.
The invention consists in the improved separable button and in the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in whichlike letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures, Figure 1 is a central section through my improved button, and Fig. 2 is a central section, the parts being separated.
My improved button consists of two members, each of a peculiar construction, which willbehereiuafterfully described. Thelower member consists of a tubular shank a, rising centrally from a disk or base 0 which is constructed integral with the shank, as clearly shown in the drawings. At its upper end the shank is provided with an enlargement or integral cup I) the purpose of which will be presently specified. The other member of the button consists of a tubular stem 01 the external diameter of which is slightly less than the internal diameter of the shank a. so that the said stem can be inserted into and fit snugly in the shank as shown in Fig. 1. The
stem is provided at its upper end with a spherical head or enlargement e, the diameter of which is a trifle greater than the internal diameter of the cup I). The head is further provided with a series of slots f whereby the head is given a certain resiliency in order that it may be compressed slightly when passing into the cup and then expand so as to bind 5 within the cup and thereby hold the two members of the button together. The head or top Q of the button issoldered or otherwise permanently secured upon the spherical head or enlargement c and may be of any preferred form, as will be readily understood.
The most advantageous form of the button top is that illustrated in the drawings in which the top is shown in the form of a hollow body, the height of which is about equal to the height of the elastic head e and in the base of which is formed an opening 71. of a diameter sufficient to clear the cup b when the two members are being fitted together.
In practice, the shank is inserted upward through the buttonhole and the stem is then inserted downward into the shank. When the two members have been pushed together the elastic head will bind in the cup, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby firmly hold the two members together. In the preferred form of the button, the top Q entirely incloses the cup and elastic head so that there will be no projecting edges liable to mutilate the surface of the cuff or collar and the accumulation of dirt in the said elastic head is prevented.
The device is extremely simple in its construction, is very easily manipulated and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
I am well aware thatseparable buttons have heretofore been known and used, and that said buttons consist of two members and means for holding them together. Therefore I make no broad claim to such construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture a separable button consisting of two members, the lower member consisting of a base or disk having an integral tubular shank rising therefrom and having at its upper end a cup shaped enlargement, and the upper member consisting of a hollow body provided with a circular opening of a size sufficient to clear the cup shaped enlargement of the lower member, a spherical head secured to the inside of said hollow body and provided on its circumference with a series of separated vertical slots, said spherical head being of a diameter equal to the diameter of the cup shaped enlarge- I In testimony that I-claim the foregoing I ment on the lower member, and a tubular have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of shank secured to the lower portion of'the April, 1894:.
