HAT-PIN-POINT-PROTECTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 16, 1912.
Patented June 24, 1913. Serial No. 715,413.
Tn 011 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY P. ANTHoNY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin-Point-Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hat pin point protecting device, and the objects of my invention are to provide a device that can be easily and quickly mounted upon the pointed end of a pin to serve as a lock whereby the pin cannot become accidentally displaced, and to provide a device that serves as a guard for preventing pedestrians and others from being injured by contacting with the pointed end of a pin.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a hat pin point protecting device embodying a spring pressed locking member that frictionally grips the pointed end of a pin to retain the device in position, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, susceptible to any desired ornamentation and highly efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat pin provided with the device, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the detached locking member.
A hat pin point protecting device in accordance with this invention comprises a cylindrical hollow metallic shell 1 and soldered or otherwise connected to the outer end of said shell is a head 2, which together with said shell is susceptible to any desired ornamentation. The inner end of the shell is tapered, as at 3 to partially close the inner end of the shell and provide an annular stop or shoulder. The shell 1, intermediate the ends thereof, has a longitudinal slot 4.
Extending through the slot 4 into the shell 1 is a locking member, comprising a circular head 5 having a central opening 6 and a handle 7. The slot 4 is of suflicient size to permit of the locking member being inserted in the shell 1, this being accomplished by placing the member sidewise until it enters the shell and then turning the member a quarter ,of a revolution whereby the opening 6 of the locking member will longitudinally aline with the opening at the inner end of the shell.
Located within the shell 1 are coiled compression springs 8 and 9, said springs having the convolutions thereof bent, as at 10 to engage opposite faces of the locking member 5 at diametrically opposite sides. The outer convolution of the spring 8 isseated against the reduced end of the shell and the outer convolution of the spring 9 bears against the head 2. The tension of the springs is sufiicient to support the locking member in angularly disposed position, whereby the walls of the opening 6 will bind against the walls of the pointed end 11 of a pin inserted in the shell 1. The binding action of the locking member 5 ,is clearly shown in Fig. 2 and in order to release the pin the handle 7 is pressed toward the head 2, thereby placing the locking member in approximately a horizontal position, releasing the pin and allowing said pin to be withdrawn from the shell 1 or the shell withdrawn from the end of the pin. The springs 8 and 9 can be placed in the shell prior to mounting the head 2 upon the shell orprior to tapering the inner end of the shell.
I attach considerable importance to the coiled compression springs 8 and 9 and these springs normally support the locking member 5 and always maintain the same in position whereby the device can be placed upon the end of a pin and locked thereon. It is even possible to insert the pin in the device without manipulating the locln'ng member, but it is preferable to manipulate this member and thereby reduce the injury to the pin to a minimum.
What I claim is A hat pin point protecting device com prising a cylindrical shell having a contracted inner end, a head for closing the outer end of said shell, a pair of coiled springs arranged within said shell and opposing each other, the opposing ends of each of said springs being bent to extend parallel with the axis of the shell, said shell provided with a slot, a circular apertured head arranged within said shell and provided with tion whereby the shank of the pin is rea handle extending through said slot, the tained in said shell. 10 opening in said circular head adapted to re- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature ceive the shank of a pin when the latter exin the presence of two witnesses.
