To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES M. CHRITTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Ford, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Hat-Pin Fastener and Protector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a device adapted to detachably engage the shank portion of a hat pin or similar structure and will afford adequate means for the protection of the point thereof.
An object of the present invention is to provide a hat pin fastener and point protector which may be easily and readily secured to the shank of a hat pin or scarf pin and will rigidly grip the same, and an outwardly projecting arm which by the pressing thereof releases thedevice and allows the shank of the pin to be easily withdrawn therefrom.
A further object is to provide a pin receiving casing with a rotatable plate mounted therein and which plate is provided with an aperture extending therethrough adapted to receive the pin therein, the rotating of the plate resulting in the angularly disposing of the side walls of the aperture which therefore engage the shank of the pin and prevent the accidental withdrawal thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise eibodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof the preferable form of my invention is illustrated in which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my improved device secured to the shank of a pin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view thereof illustrating the internal construction of the various coacting parts. Figs. 3 and 4t are views showing in detail the construction of the locking plate by means of which a pin is detachably and at the same time rigidly secured to the device.

Referring to the drawings in which simi lar reference numerals designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, 1 is a casing of sufficient size to receive the shank 2 of a pin or similar structure therein. The casing 1 terminates in the restrict ed end portion 3 slightly pointed so that when the shank of the pin is fully inserted within the casing as illustrated in Fig. 3 the extremity of the pin will come in contact with the central portion of the end of the casing 3 and held in proper alinement accordingly.
The casing 1 is provided with an outstanding ridge 1 intermediate of its ends, the purose of which is for ornamentation as well as to lend strength and rigidity to the entire structure. Rigidly secured to the pointed end 3 of the casing is the flat circular disk 5 or any equivalent thereof, the same forming a flat or enlarged surface to take the place of the pointed extremity of the pin, which the device herein described is adapted to protect.
In order that the device herein disclosed may engage the shank of a pin and prevent the said shank from being accidentally withdrawn therefrom, a circular plate such as illustrated in Fig. a is provided, the circular portion thereof fitting within the casing 1 as shown in Fig. 2. The circular plate 6 is provided with an aperture 7 extending centrally therethrough and due to the material thickness of the plate and the restricted size of the aperture 7, the shank 2 of the pin will enter or pass through such aperture or opening at such time only as when the axis of the opening 7 is in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the shank of the pin. lBy those means the shank of the pin is passed through the aperture 7 and in so doing holds the plate 6 in an upright manner. However, when any retractive stress or force is exerted upon the shank of the pin 2, the plate 6 immediately assumes or tends to assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 which brings the edges of the aperture 7 into forced contact with and therefore frictionally engages the shank 2 of the pin to prevent the withdrawing of the shank of the pin. ilowever, the plate (3 is provided with the upwardly extending arm 8, the same projecting through a suitable slot 9 in the casing 1 and provides means whereby the plate (3 may be held in proper l. lit
