SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,362, dated June '7, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MICHEL BREISCH, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Stud, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved stud, and more particularly to the means for attaching it to the shirt-bosom.

The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fullypointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of the stud, showing it closed; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the same; Fig. 3, a similar section showing it open; Fig. 4, a longitudinal section through the tube 6; Fig. 5, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 6, a top view of Fig. 5; Fig. 7, a longitudinal section through stem 1); Fig.8, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 9, a side elevation of spring (I; and Fig. l0,a section on line 5050, Fig. 1.

The letter a represents the head or setting of a stud, to which there is secured a downwardly-depending stem 1), slotted at the bottom to form a pair of cheeks Z). Between these checks there is pivoted a pair of jaws c, Fig. 8.

The stem Z) is provided with a longitudinal groove Z1 for the reception of a spring d. This spring is attached at its lower end to the stem 1), while at its upper end it is provided with a laterally-projecting finger-piece d. To permit a free play of the spring, the stem Z) maybe tapered, as shown in Figs. 2 and 7.

The stem b and spring cl are incased within a tube 6, having a closed base e and an open laterally-projecting head 8 through which the stem 5 and spring (Z project outwardly. The tube 6 is provided with a pair of slots 6 at its lower end, opposite the jaws c, and is also provided with an additional slot 0 for the reception of a nose (Z of spring (Z.

The operation of the device will be readily understood. To insert the stud, the stem 1) is first drawn up, Fig. 3. The tube 6 is then grasped by its head 6 and pushed into the opening of the shirt-bosom. Next, the head a is pressed inward to cause the stem Z? to descend into the tube. As soon as the jaws strike the base 6 they will be projected out of the slots e Fig. 1, to form a foot that will hold the stud firmlyin its seat. In this position the stem and jaws will be locked by the engagement of the nose d with its slot 6*. To remove the stud, the spring (1 is pressed i11- ward by its finger-piece d to cause a disengagement (if the nose (1 with slot 9 The stem b may now be drawn up to draw thejaws into the tube, and to thus permit the tube to be pulled out of its opening in the shirtbosom.

To prevent the entire withdrawal of the stem from the tube, asuitable stop should be formed. This stop is shown to consist of a projection or shoulder b of stem 1), that abuts against an inward extension of head e Fig. 3, in the distended position of the stud.

hat I claim is 1. The combination of a head a, with an inner stem Z) secured thereto, jaws c, pivoted to the stem, a catch, and an independently-movable outertube e, provided with slots, through which the jaws are adapted to be projected, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of head a, with stem 1) secured thereto, jaws c, pivoted to the stem, a spring (Z, having laterally-projecting handle (Z' and nose (1 and with a surrounding slotted tube 6, having head 6 substantially as specified.
