To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT L. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the some, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention is an improvement in pen-guides, it having for its object to provide asimple and inexpensive device of this nature which may be readily applied to any ordinary pen-holder and which will accurately guide the most awkward penman.

My invention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Figure 1 is a view showing the position of the penguide when in use mounted in the pen-holder; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a pen-holder, a pen and the penguide, assembled; Fig. 3 is a side view, of what is shown in Fig. l with a part of the ferrule of the pen-holder broken away; and, Figs. 4 and 5 are side and front views of the pen-guide.

In the drawings, the pen-holder is shown as comprising the usual shank a, ferrule b and sleeve 0 inserted in the holder. 7

(Z is a pen inserted, as usual, in between the ferrule and the sleeve.

I is flattened at one end, as at e, and carries at its other end a porcelain or other smooth round ball, knob or head f; if desired this head may be of metal and formed integrally with the shank d. Shank d is curved, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

The pen-guide is inserted with its flattened portion in between the ferrule and the sleeve on the right side of the pen-holder, the head being arranged so as to eX- tend off to the right. The head f of the pen-guide extends short of the point of the pen, so that in the use of the parts when assembled the pen will assume the proper slant.

It will be understood that my improved pen-guide may, if desired, be inserted on the left hand side of the pen-holder, instead of the right hand side, if the user is a left-handed person. i

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination of a pen-holder, a pen, and a pen guide consisting of a curved shank mounted in the pen holder and having :1 ball at its free end, substantially as described.

The combination of a penholder comprising a shank, a ferrule, and a sleeve inserted in said ferrule, a pen, and u pen-guide having one end flattened and inserted in be tween the ferrule and the sleeve, said pelrguide being curved away from the pen-holder, substantially as described.
