Description
the same.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT ALVIS STOOKER, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
CHALK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 552,403, dated December 31, 1895.
Application filed. July 26, 1895. $erial No. 557,201. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT ALvIs STOCKER, of Dixon, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Ohalk-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved chalk-holder, which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely hold a piece of chalk and permit of adjusting it for conveniently writing or drawing and for other purposes.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 3 is a plan View of the spring clamping-band, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cap for the casing.
The improved chalk-holder is provided with a casing A, preferably made of sheet metal,
and adapted to receive a tubular friction-slide B for moving the chalk O outward in the casing to project its point a suitable distance beyond the end of the casing, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. The friction-slide B is formed with a shank B, extending through an opening or slot A, formed longitudinally throughout the length of the casing, the outer end of the shank B being adapted to be engaged by the operator for conveniently moving the slide to adjust the chalk, as previously stated.
. On that end of the casing A through which passes the chalk C is arranged a clampingband D, preferably made of spring metal, and having its ends overlapping, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, the said band serving to draw the casing A in firm contact with the chalk O to securely hold the latter in position in the casing. On the other end of the casing A is arranged a removable cap E, adapted to be moved over the projecting end of the chalk C, so as to cover the latter while not in use.
It will be seen that a holder of the construction described can be very cheaply manufactured and the chalk readily applied and shifted, without danger of breaking the point.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- As an improved article of manufacture, a chalk holder consisting in the open ended tube A formed of sheet material, slotted from end to end and of the same diameter throughout its length, a friction slide B within the holder and having an operating pin B proj ecting through said slot, a contractile band D encircling the outer end of the tube and having overlapping ends and a tubular cap E to fit over either end of the tube, substantially as described.
