Description

J. C. WAHL.
PEN our.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5. I918- Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
N\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ll lll aga n/ UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
JOHN C. WAHL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE WAHL COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
PEN-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26, 1919.
Application filed January 5, 1918. Serial No. 210,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN C. WAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved clip for fountain pens or the like and has for its object the providing of a clip which shall be simple in structure and therefore easily manufactured and at the same time held securely in the pen.
My invention may be best understood by reference to the following figures, of which- Figure 1 is a part longitudinal section of a pen equipped with my improved clip;
Fig. 2 is a view of the exterior of the pen;
Fig. 3 is a detail of the top of the cap, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view ,of the clip itsel My improved clip is adapted to be mounted in the cap 10 of a pen 11, and in said cap is friotiona'lly mounted a hollow plug 12 having a hole 13 therein to accommodate the pen point 14. The top end of the plug 12 has in it a slot 15, in which is placed the clip 16. Reference to Fig. 4 will disclose that said clip consists of the clip proper 16 projecting on the exterior of the pen, a spring portion 17, and a right angled portion 18, the portion 18 serving as the means of securing the clip to the pen cap. The plug 12, while frictionally mounted in the cap 10, is provided with a flat surface so as to leave a space between the interior of the cap 10 and said plug of slightly greater width than the thickness of the spring portion 17 of the clip 16. The cap 10 is provided with a hole 19, through which the clip projects, and on the clip is placed an escutcheon plate 20 to cover said hole.
My improved clip is assembled in the cap 10 as follows:
The esoutcheon plate 20 is slipped over the end 18 and is advanced until it reaches the bend in the clip 16. The ends 17 and 18 are is then forced into the cap, said plug when contacting with the lower edge of the end 18 serving to jam said end into the interior of the cap 10 by reason of the contact of the angle 21 with the interior of the cap 10, as shown in Fig. 1. As before noted, there is a space between the plug 12 and the interior of the cap 10 greater than the thickness of the portion 17. Consequently the eifective spring length of the clip is the distance between the oorner 21 and the portion 16. By reason of providing this extra sprin length my improved clip is much more flexi le than those heretofore employed.
Many changes and alterations can be made in my herein described structure without departing from the spirit of my invention, since I claim 1. In a fountain pen, the combination of a cap, a plug frictionally mounted in said cap, said plug having a flattened portion, a clip having an attaching portion, a spring portion having a part thereof adapted to register with the flattened portion of said plug and a right-angled portion adapted to be jammed in the interior of the pen cap by said plug.
2. In a fountain pen the combination of a cap, a plug frictionally mounted in said cap, said plug having a flattened portion and a clip having an attaching portion, a spring portion adapted to register with the flattened side of said plug, and a right angled pontion adapted to be wedged into the interior of said pen cap by said plug.
3. In a fountain pen, the combination of a cap, a plug frictionally mounted in said cap, said plug having a flattened portion and a clip mounted in said cap and having a shank which is yieldable in reference to said cap, said yieldable portion of said clip consisting of a part located outside of said cap and a part located inside of said cap and adapted to register with the flattened ortion of said plug.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN G. WAHL.
