Description

J. BARKER FOUNTAIN PE Filed Sept, 10
11v VENTOR fa/77m; flaw/far MTORNEYS 5 y B w 5 4 0 Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES JAMES BARKER, OI KALAMAZOO, EICHIGAN.
FOUNTAIN PEN.
Application filed September 10, 1925. Serial No. 55,551.
To all whom it may concern:
fountain pen.
Be it known that I, James BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city and county of Kalamazoo, tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Pens, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to improvements 1n fountain pens.
' The main objects of this inventlon are to provide an improved fountain pen in which the cap is securely retained upon the barrel and at the same time may be readily removed as occasion requires.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specificationf The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodlment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of my improved Fig. 2 is a detail view with the cap in section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. i is a detail view partially in section with the cap arranged upon the outer end of the barrel.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking detent and its supporting spring.
Fig. 6 is a detail view partially in section of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section corresponding to that of Fig. 3 showing another modification or embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing "similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the severalviews, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the barrel of my improved fountain pen which is provided with an annular groove 2 in spaced relation to the inner end thereof and an annular groove 3 in spaced relationto its outer end.
' The cap 4, in the embodiment illustrated,
is internally threaded at 5 to enga 9 threads 6. These threads, however, may dispensed with, with satisfactory results. The cap has an annular roove 7 therein and a hole 8 aligned with t e groove in the barrel when the cap is arranged on either eud of the barrel.
A detent carrying spring 9 in the form of a split ring with overlapping ends is arranged 111 the groove 7 of the cap, the inner end of the spring having a hole 10. therein through which a detent '11 secured to the outer end of the spring is disposed, this detent pro ecting through a sole 8 in the cap to engage the groove in the barrel thereby effectively securing the cap in position. The detent has a head 12 at its inner end so that it cannot be pulled through the hole 10 in the inner end of the spring, the head serving as a retaining means for the spring.
The end 13 of the spring serves as a finger piece to facilitate in disengaging the detent from'the groove permitting the re moval of the cap.
In the modificationshown in Fig. 6, the
cap 14 is provided with a combined. pocket 011p and detent carrying spring 15 disposed longitudinally of the cap, the detent 16 being secured on the inner end of this spring to project through a hole 17 in the cap into engagement with the grooves in the barrel.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the retaining ring 18 embraces the cap and has outwardly projecting ears 19 thereon in which the lever-like detent carrying member 20 is pivoted, the detent 21 projecting through a hole in the ca to engage the groove, the outer end of this lever 20 bein engaged by the end 22 of the band 18 whic constitutes a spring for holding the detent;
in engagement.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments'or adaptations of my invention as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may I be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i v
1. In a fountain en, the combination with the barrel provided with an annular groove spaced from the end thereof, of a cap adapted to telescope with said barrel, said cap'having an, annular groove and a hole therethrough registering with said grooves when the cap is-e'ngagfd upon thebarrel, an annular spring aving overla ping ends arranged in said groove in sea cap, '"and a headed detent secured to the outer end 8 of said spring and arranged through -an openin in the inner end thereof to pro ect throng said hole in said cap into said barrel groove for detachablysecurmg the cap upon the barrel.
2. In a fountain n, the combination with the barrel provided with an annular groove spaced from the end thereof, of a 'cap adapted to telescope with said barrel, said cap having a hole therethrough reg1s 1 terin with said grooves when the cap is en- 'gagedupon the barrel, anannular spring having overlapping ends embracing vsaid cap, and a headed detent secured to the 'outer end of said spring and arranged through an opening in the-inner end thereof to project through said hole in said cap to engage said groove for detachably the cap upon the barrel.
3. In a fountainv pen, the combination with the barrel provided with an annular groove spaced from the end thereof, of a cap adapted to telescope with said barrel, said cap having a holetherethrough'registering with said grooves when the'cap is en-' gaged upon the barrel, an annular spring embracing said cap, and a detent secured to one end of said spring and arranged to prosecuring 4.'In a fountain pen, the combination 5 with the barrel having an adjacent the end thereof, of a-cap adapted to telescope with said barrel and having a hole therein aligned with said groove when the cap is in position, and a detent carrying spring secured with a detent arranged through said hole therein to detachably engage said groove.
5. In a fountain pen, the combination of the barrel having an annular groove adjacent one end thereof, a ca adapted to telescope with said barrel an having an opening therein registering with said groove when the cap is in position, and a spring pressed detent arranged through said open-' ing in said cap to engage said groove.
6. In a fountain pen,
the combination annular groove to said cap and provided with the barrel having a recess adjacent one end thereof, of a cap adapted to telescope with said barrel and having an opening therein registerin with said recess when the cap is in positlon, and a detent mounted on said cap to project through said opening therein to engage said recess. J
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand." I
JAMES BARKER.
