Be it known that I, ALEXANDER S. CAR- DELLA, a citizen of Mexico, residing at Kinmundy, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented new. and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat-fasteners; and its pri mary object is to provide a device which is of simple and durable construction, which may' be readily attached to the head, and which will hold the hat securely in position without injury thereto or necessitating the puncturing thereof.

To these ends the invention consists in providing a pin which is adapted toengage the head of the wearer and which is provided at opposite ends with oppositely-extending spring-arms adapted to contact with the inner vsurface of the hat at opposite sides thereof,

and thereby retain the same in position.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a section through, a hat with the fastener in position therein, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the fastener detached.

Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, l is the back of the pin, formed, preferably, of two twisted wires, one of which is coiled downward, as shown at 2, and terminates in a tongue or pointed strip 3, which is adapted to be engaged by a hook 4, formed by the opposite ends of said wire. The second wire is bent upwardly at opposite ends into similar coils 5, which terminate in out- Wardly-extending arms 6, the ends of which are curved.

When it is desired to fasten the hat to the head, the pin 3 is inserted into the hair and then placed in engagement with the hook 4. The hat is then slipped over the device, and it is obvious that the arms 6 will be pressed inward thereby and press rmly upon the inner surface of the hat at opposite sides thereof. By this construction it will be seen that the hat will be firmly held in position by outward pressure of the arms, and that it may be readily removed from the head by merely forcing the same upward from the arms 6.

In the foregoing description I have shown theV preferred form of my'inventiou but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make suoli changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a hat-fastener, the combination with a back; of an outwardly-extending springarm at each end thereof formed integral therewith and adapted to be depressed by the downward movement of a hat thereover and au tomatically contact with the inner surface thereof, and means for fastening said back to the head of the wearer.

2. In a hat-fastener, the combination with a back; of outwardly-extending spring-arms at the ends thereof adapted to be depressed by the downward movement of a hat there over and automatically contact with the inner surface thereof, and a hook and pin formed integral with the back.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a hat fastener formed of two sections of wire twisted to form a back; a hook upon one end of one wire; a pin formed by the opposite end of said wire and adapted to engage the hook; coils formed by the opposite ends of the second wire; andan outwardly-extending arm to each coil adapted to automatically contact with the inner surface of a hat.
