HAIR-FASTENER;
'sPEcrFIcAT'ioiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,764, dated are 12, 1900.
Application filed November 17, 1899. Serial No. 737,350. (No model.)
TO all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER ELSWORTH MUL- LINIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Coifey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Hair-Fastener and Ribbon-Holder, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair-fasteners and ribbon holders or retainers; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and efiective device of this character which maybe easily applied to and removed from the plaited hair of girls and young ladies, the said fastener being equally applicable to the hair when loose, and adapted to prevent the accidental disconnection or slipping olf of a bow of ribbon or other analogous ornament, and also permits the change of bows or ornaments as frequently as may be desired withoutallowing the hair to become disarranged.
The invention primarily consists of a hold ing-wire around which a secondwireis twisted, or both wires interlocked by regular twists" in each, and leaving the ends of the holdingwire free toextendin opposite directions,while both ends of the otherwire are bent into a spiral, the holding-wire and spiral having in conjunction therewith a retaining-lever movably and inseparably attached to one end of the holding-wire and free for removable engagement with the opposite extremity of saidlatter wire.
Theinvention further consists in the detail construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of plaited hair, showing the improved device applied thereto in operative position as well as a bow of ribbon. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 3 is a section through the plaited hair, illustrating the position of the device when applied.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding'parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a holding-wire which forms the main support of the entire device and which is interlocked by twists 2 with a spiral groove the parts of which protit ject away from the holding-wire 1 in opposite directions to provide reversely extending .pointed terminals 4, which form a double screw. The one extremity of the holding-wire 1 is formed with an eye 5, and the opposite extremity is depressed to provide an attaching means or hook 6. The angular end 7 of a retain ing-lever Sis movably attached to the eye 5, and at its opposite end the said retaining-lever has a ring 9 movably applied thereto and adapted to be caught over the depressed or hooked extremity 6 of the wire 1. From the foregoing description it will be observed that the improved device is made up of three pieces of Wire, which may be either of fine or base quality or a cheap grade of material plated or otherwise ornamented.
In applying the improved fastener and holder the oppositely-directed terminals 4 of the spiral 3 are turned into the lower extremity of the plaited hair from the outer side and until the holding-wire l is brought to bear closely against the hair in a transverse direction. The retaining-lever 8 is then drawn across the plaited hair and the ring 9 applied over the hooked extremity 6 of the said wire 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. When the device is thus applied, the plaited hair will be prevented from loosening, and a how 10, of ribbon, or other ornament can be fastened with perfect safety above the location of the device and prevented from slipping ofi the hair by reason of the stop provided by the secured fastener and thus prevent loss of the said ribbon or other ornament. Instead of applying the ribbon above the improved fastener it can be equally well applied over or attached to the latter with the same advantage. The fastener can be easily removed from the hair by disconnecting the ring 9 and releasing the spiral 3 from the plait, and af-. ter the device has been applied as heretofore set forth it will always remain in the position originally intended by reason of the embedded coils, which will obviate or obstruct any tendency toward slipping.
Instead of using the improved device exclusively for holding plaited hair it may be equally applied as a clasp for loose hair, and, moreover, by increasing the size of the several parts the device could be made to serve with efiiciency in holding plaited horse tails or manesxor for "1%!!5'01116! purpose to which it may be applicable.
portions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principleor sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
is claimed as new"is tnemity-moyabl-y attached to one end'of said wire and provided with "a ring at the Opposite extremitytoremovably engage the other end of. said wire, the said lever when in attached position extending transversely across the plane of the opposite side of the coil.
2. A device of the character set forth consisting of a holding-wire, a coil with reverselydirected terminals having a twisted connection with the said wire and its opposite extremities projected beyond the coil, one of the extremities of the wire being formed with an eye and the other with a hook, and a retaina I ing-lever having an angular end loosely at- Having thus described theinvention, what 1,
tached to the said .eye of the holding-wi re and provided with a ring at'its opposite extremity 1. A device of the character set forth 'hav- 1 ing a coil with reversely-directed terminals to facilitate application of the same, a hold-f i-ngmireintertwisted witha portion of the said :coil and extending transversely'of the .lattenand a retaining-lever having one ex- 20 to en-gagethe said hook.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signatnie in the presence "of .twowitnessesQ; U
