SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,536, dated July 10, 1900.
Application filed April 18, 1899. Serial No. 713,463. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH S. SWANK, of Wolcottville, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hat-holder which is simple and durable in construction, easily manipulated, and more especially designed for the use of ladies to firmly secure a hatto the head. g
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same.
The improved hat-holder is provided with a frame A, preferably made of wire bent to conform approximately to the cross-section of the crown of a hat, the wire being bent near its ends into loops B for securely sewing the frame A in position on the inside of the crown, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1
On the ends of the frame A adjacent to the loops B are formed eyes or guideways' 0, through which extends loosely an elastic D in the shape of a band, cord, or the like. On the ends of the elastic D, outside of the eyes 0, are secured hair-pins F, each having its shank twisted together, as at F, to form a loop F for conveniently taking hold of the hair -pin and drawing the same outward against the tension of the elastic and to securely push the hair-pin into the hair on the head of the wearer and hold the hat firmly in position.
By constructing the hair-pin as described a convenient means is formed for attaching the end of the elastic D at the twisted portion F, so that when the hairpin is released the resiliency of the elastic draws the hair-pin back against the eye 0, thus preventing the elastic from slipping completely out of said eye.
The middle portion of the elastic D is adapted to be hooked upon a hook G, secured to the frame A, at the middle thereof, so that the two side portions of the elastic stand at an angle to each other and each in on the hat, and is always in proper condition for conveniently securing the hat in place on the wearers head by simply taking hold of the loops F of the hair-pins, drawing the same outward, and finally passing the hairpins into the hair to allow the elastic to draw the hair-pins firmly in position on the hair upon the wearer releasing the hold on the loops F Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A hat-holder, comprising a frame having guideways, means for attaching said frame to a hat on the inside of the crown, an elastic extending looselythrough said guideways, hair-pins secured at the ends ofthe elastic outside of the guideways, and a hook on said frame and adapted to be engaged by the middle portion of said elastic, as set forth.
2. In a hat-holder, the combination of a bowed frame having at each end a guide, the intermediate portion of the frame being out of alinement with the guides, an elastic, the end portions of which are passed through and are movable in the guides, hair-pins attached to the ends of the elastic to engage the hair of the wearer, and means attached to the bowed or intermediate portion of the frame, such means being capable of holding the intermediate portion of the elastic aside to place the elastic under tension.
