Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed January 22, 1907. Serial No. 353,434.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, SIeIsMUND ROsENTI-IAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to safety devices such as are used for attachment to hats for the purpose of keeping the same from being blown away, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character having the novel features of improvement which will hereinafter be pointed out and finally claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, where- Figure 1 illustrates in side elevation a mans head upon which is a hat having my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing in perspective the parts which form the clasp which is adapted to be attached to the hat-brim. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the shiftable take-up for adjusting the length of the cord. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section thereof, the section being taken on a line a a in Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a bot tom plan view thereof. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of take-up, and Fig. 7 is a modified form. of the hat-brim clasp.
Like numerals of reference are intended to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the drawing, the numerals 1 2 3 indicate the hat-brim clasp, the take-up, and cord, respectively. The cord 3 terminates in an adjustable loop 4, which when the cord is in use is passed around a buttonas 5,for instance. The clasp 1 is composed ofa sheet 6 of suitable material, preferably-resilient, bent over on itself, whereby a jaw 6 is formed, in which the brim of the hat is inserted. The members 6 and 6 of the clasp 1 are provided with alined openings 7 and 8, through which a binding-screw 9 is adapted to pass, a nut 10 being provided to hold the members of the clasp together. To apply the clasp to the brim, it is but necessary to place the brim in the jaw 63*, then pass the screw 9 through the brim and alined openings 7 and 8 and apply the nut 10. The cord 3 is held by the clasp 1, an opening 7 at the rear thereof being provided for the purpose, the cord being knotted inside of the jaw 6 to prevent it being pulled through. The take-up or adjuster 2 is composed of a hollow body portion 11, in which openings 12, 13, and 14 are made, through which the cord 3 is adapted to pass, the free end of said cord being knotted on its free end and on the inside of said body portion 11, as shown in Fig. 4. In this instance a shoulder 15 is formed on the inside of the body portion 11 for the reception of a back plate or cover 16, which is removably fitted to the said body portion 11 and retained in place by prongs 1 1 which after the plate 16 has been positioned are bent over, as shown in Fig. 5. The construction of the take-up 2 is such that the loop 4 can be increased or decreased in size, whereby the cord 3 is lengthened or shortened to suit the wearer. By removing the back plate 16, which can be done by bending up the prongs 11 it is possible to get at the free end of the cord 3, so as to remove or place in a cord. The face of the take-up 2 may be suitably ornamented to enhance its appearance.
A modified form of take-up is illustrated in Fig. 6 and is in the form of a locket having a pivoted cover 17, a hinge 18 being provided for that purpose. A removable plate or picture 19 is suitably held in said locket. The body portion 11 is provided with the open ings 12, 13, and 14, the openings 13 and 14 only being shown. Fig. 7 illustrates a modified form of clasp 1, in. which the screw 20 thereof is integral with the lower member 6 and adapted to pass through the opening 7 in the upper member 6 when the clasp is applied to a hat.
It will of course be understood that when the device is not in use the cord may be wound around the hat-crown, and it will also be clear that instead of placing the loop 4 over a button the take-up 2 may be passed through a buttonhole and utilized as a stop.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A retaining device for hats, comprising a clasp adapted for attachment to the brim thereof, a cord carried by said clasp and terminating in a loop, a shiftable take-up having attached. thereto the free end of the cord, said take-up comprising a hollow body portion having a removable cover and being provided with openings adapted to receive the cord intermediate the ends thereof.
2. A retaining device for hats, comprising a clasp adapted for attachment to the hat, a cord carried by said clasp and terminating in a loop, a shiftable take-up having attached thereto the free end of the cord, said take-up comprising a plurality of separably connected members and being provided with openings adapted to receive the cord intermediate the ends thereof.
3. A retaining device for hats, comprising a clasp adapted for attachment to the hat, a cord carried by said clasp and terminating in a loop, and a shiftable take-up composed of a hollow body portion having openings in the wall thereof, one of said openings being adapted to retain the free end of said cord, the other of said openings being adapted to retain said cord intermediate the ends thereof, said body portion being provided with a cover, substantially as and for the purpose described. 1
4. A retaining devicefor hats, comprising a clasp adapted for attachment to a hat, a cord carried by said clasp and terminating in a loop, a shiftable take-up composed of a hollow body portion having openings in the wall thereof, one of said openings being adapted to retain the free end of said cord, the other of said openings being adapted to retain said cord intermediate the ends thereof, and a cover pivotally connected to said body portion.
Signed at New York city, New York, this 21st day of January, 1907.
