Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BIANCA LESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Hat- Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved childs hat-fastening,
It is a Considerable annoyance, especially to mothers of families, that the elastics for hats and caps frequently tear off from the cap or hat and have to be resewed thereto. Another objectionable feature is that by the use of the elastic the same becomes longer and has to be taken in from time to time, all of which takes time and tries patience.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved childrens hat-fastener which can be readily attached to the hat or other object without sewing and which can be readily readjusted from time to time without sewing; and for this purpose the invention consists in the novel features to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved fastening. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the hat, showing the elastic attached at one end; and Figs. 3 and 4 are details (res ectively top view and vertical longitudina section) of the sliding buckle for adjusting the length of the elastic.

Referring to the drawings, (1 represents an elastic or band such as is used for the hats and caps of children. The elastic is provided at one end with a loop a. The size of the elastic is adjusted by means of a sliding buckle b, the middle portion or bridge of which is attached to one end of the elastic, while the main portion of the elastic is passed through the buckle and over the middle portion or bridge in the usual well-known manner. In the loop a and at the opposite end of the elastic are placed fastening devices (1, each of which is formed with an eye cl and two parallel and pointed shanks (1 By piercing the pointed shanks of the fastening devices d at through the body of the hat, spreading open the ends in opposite direction, and then bending the eye downwardly onto the body of the hat the elastic is firmly attached to the same. The length after the elastic is attached to the hat by the fastening device is adjusted by means of the adjustingbuckle. The adjustment is repeated from time to time as the elastic is gradually lengthened by wear. By the fastening device and .the adjusting device the sewing on of the ends of the elastic Whenever broken off by' use is dispensed with, while the increasing of the length of the elastic is compensated by the facility of taking in the length by means of the sliding buckle, by which the length of the loop at one end of the elastic is adjusted, and thereby the proper length of the elastic restored.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A childrens hat-fastening, comprising fastening devices adapted to be detachably secured to the hat-body, each consisting of a wire eye provided with means for piercing the hat-body so as to secure the device in position thereon, an elastic cord or band having one end secured to one fastening device and having the other end passed through the other fastenin device and back on the body portion of t e cord or band so as to form a loop, and a buckle at the junction of the free end with the body portion of the cord or band.
