PATENT OFFICE.
MARY'M. BRITTON, or READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT-FASTENER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,605, dated. October 18, 1904.
Application filed March 3, 1904. Serial No. 196,260. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known'that I, MARY M. BRITToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements. in'
hat-fasteners; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple device thatmay be easily secured to the inside of the hat-band, becoming an integral part thereof, and adapted to engage the side combs usually worn by women in such a manner that the hat will be The numeral 1 indicates a hat of ordinary construction, and 2 indicates my fastener, which is secured to the inside of the hat, preferably one at each side, in such a manner that only the loops on the ends thereof are exposed, the dotted line in Fig. 2 representing the line of the hat-brim.
The fastener consists of a flexible and resilient body, preferably of wire, circular in cross-section and covered with any suitable material-such, for instance, as silk thread. The fastener comprises a body portion 2, slightly curved to conform approximately I with the curve of the hat-band and formed with a loop 3 at either end. These loops are formed by bending the wire down at the end of the body portion to a point e below its horizontal plane, then bending them upward to a point above its plane, forming a semicircular loop 5, and then downwardly to a point in line with said point 4, and then back to the body portion 2, the free end 6 being wound around the body. When these fasteners are secured in position in the hat, the loops extend upwardly and slightly inwardly.
The numeral 7 indicates an ordinary side comb which is placed in the hair of the wearer with the teeth up, leaving the body 8 of the comb at the lowest position. V
The loops 3 of the fastener will engage the portion 8 of the comb, as indicated in Fig. 1, and any upward movement of the hat will tend to force the combmore securely into the hair, making it impossible for the hat to become disengaged accidentally.
The resiliency of'the hat, as well as that of the fastener-loops, will permit the easy adjustment or voluntary removal of the hat to or from thehead of the wearer.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Ahat-fastener comprising a plurality of flexible wire bodies secured to the inside of the hat, one at each side, said bodies formed with an approximately U-shaped loop at either end, the said loops alone being exposed and adapted to engage the side combs in the hair of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this specification in the presence of two sub- ED. A. KELLY, I GEO. M. MILLER.
