\ and State of Oregon, have invented anew and Improved Hat or Bonnet Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a novel device to be attached to ladies and childrens hats or bonnets, for holding them upon thehead; and the invention consists of a coil of iine wire cornbined with fastening devices at its ends for securing the coil to a hat or bonnet, the coil being of suitable length to pass under the hair of the wearer, and of sufficient elasticity to close snugly upon the hair and head.
The invention also consists in providingthe coil with a safety-cord to prevent the hair from passing between thecoils, and thus getting fastened therein, and to prevent the wire from being stretched too far.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, fo-rrning a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows my invention applied to a hat. Fig. 2is au enlarged view of the device removed from the hat. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation of a portion of the device, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of one of the fastening-plates. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the plate C, wire B, shank b3, and screw f.
A represents a coil ofiine elastic wire ofsuficientlength to reach from side to side of a hat or bonnet and to pass under the back hair ofthe wearer. Each end ofthe elastic coil is provided with a U shaped wire,B, the ends of which are turned outward, as shown at c c. The wires B are pivoted in the fastening devices or plates C, which are adapted to be stitched to the hat or bonnet through small orifices c e. These plates are each provided with a loop, d, inthe sides of which are formed the orifices c e, in which the ends a of the wires B fit, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. By springing the members ofthe wires B inward they may be detached from the loops d for convenience in fastening and for removing the coil from one hat or bonnet and attaching it to another.
The Ushaped wires B are adapted to be screwed into the ends of the coil by threaded shanks b3, (shown in Fig. 3,) and within the coil is placed the cord. f, whieh,passing through holes in the points f', is then made fast at its ends, the purpose of the cord being to prevent the hair from passing through between the coils, and also to retain the wire and prevent it from being injured bystretching the coil too far. I may use cord, braid, tape, thread, or ribbon to place within the coil.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The fastening devices or plates G/,provided with the loops d, having orices e, in combination with the fasteningwireB and coiled elastic spring A, the ends of the wires B being turned outward, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The coiled elastic wire A, provided with the screwsf, in combination with the cordf, attached t0 the screws, for preventing the hair from passing between the coils, said screws being made fast to the threaded shanksb ofthe Ushaped wires B, substantially as shown and described.
