POCKET OUTDOOR MOSQUITO-CAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent l ve. 499,965, dated June 20, 1893i Application filed August 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMMA F. A. BUSHNELL, of I-Iaverstraw, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PocketOutdoor Mosquito-Caps; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

. This invention is an improved portable insect shield, or head protector which I'denomimate (a pocket out-door mosquito-cap) and it is especially designed for use by residents of those sections ofcountry infested by mosquitoes and other vicious insects, and for hunters and fishermen; and it consists in a light collapsible or foldable frame preferablyadapted to fit on the head of a person, and also preferably made of skeleton form, having a number of light spring wires, or other projecting guards attached to it in such manner that when worn on the head these guards will project beyond the sides of the head and face and therebykeep the guaze or veil which is attached to the frame out of contact with the exposed portions of the face andneck of the wearer, and when not in use the cap can be folded into a small package.

. The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates the protector as in use. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with netting removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view.

The frame as shown is formed of aband A adapted to encircle the forehead having its ends adjustably united by a buckle a, or other adjusting device so that it can be fitted to various heads; and B, B, are straps connected together at center and lying at right angles to each other their ends being fastened to the band A at equi-distant points. The whole, when fitted to the head resembles a skeleton cap or bonnet frame.

0, O, are a series of light wireloops, attached to band A and projecting horizontally and radially therefrom when it is adjusted to the head of the wearer, and O G are similar loops attached to the centers of straps B, 13,

at the point where they intersect. Other similar loops 0, 0, may be attached to the straps or bands,as indicated, if desired. Each loop is preferably formed of a single wire, bent into bow shape and havinga small single coil 0 at center while its ends are bent first at right angles, then given a single coil 0 and then bent down as shown at 0 Fig. 3. To secure the loops in place these ends 0 are first passed through the material and then coiled as at 0 Fig. 3, thereby holding the loops securely in place, and coils c a, cause them to stand outfrom the straps or bands when the latter are taut or fiat. The coils 0 are hidden by the linings A B attached to the bands and straps as shown. A sackshaped net or veil D is slipped over the frame, and its closed end attached thereto by sewing or tying it to the central coils c of the loops as indicated at D. The lower end of the sack is provided with a draw cord (1, by which it can be fastened closely around the body of the wearer.

In using the device, the wearer slips his head into the open end of the net sack and fastens the frame 011 his head, as indicated in Fig. 1. The loops projecting in all directions hold the net away from the face and neck, and the lower part of sack can be tied around the body of wearer, as it should be large enough to allow the hands and arms to be drawn therein.

The whole frame is so light that it will not inconvenience the wearer in the least, and yet protects him effectually from annoyance by flying insects. When not in use the protector can be folded and carried in the pocket.

Various modifications may be made in the construction of the frame or cap, and in the manner of attaching the loops thereto without avoiding my invention, the essential features of which are the close fitting head piece with projecting devices adapted to keep the net away from the'face and neck.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is'

1. A collapsible pocket out door mosquito cap consisting of head band and cross straps attached thereto all of flexible material, a se ries of wire loops attached to said band, and straps in such manner that when said band when the band is fastened to the head of the wearer, and similar loops attached to the :5

cross pieces at the intersection thereof, and a net sack over all, the whole being collapsible and foldable when notin use, substantially as and .for the pn rpose described.
