APPLIOATIOH FILED RAR. 21,1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR A. WALZ, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEADsPROTECTOR.
To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. VVALZ, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and Stato of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a head covering or protector', and has for an object to pro vide a transparent protector supported upon the head and having its sides spaced from the head so as to hold olf mosquitos, flies, bees, and other insects, as well as to protect the head from all objects moving in the air.
Another object of this invention is to provide a protector of this character with a flexible support within its upper end adapted to rest upon the head of the wearer and carry the protector, the support being of such peculiar shape as to space the sides of the protector from the head.
A further object of this invention is to peculiarly form a head protector whereby 1t may be closed at its lower end about the neck of the wearer to exclude insects and the like to be kept from the head.
The invention still further contemplates a protector which may be folded into comparatively small space for transportation and storing away, a protector which is o-f simple construction and lifht in weight, and one which can be quicky applied to the head or removed therefrom t-o produce a thoroughly practical and etlicient device.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction,
,reference is to be had to the following descrlption and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved protector as applied to the head; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the protector and looking down through the same; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of l the upper end or dome of the protector;
Fig. 4 is a detail Jsectional view taken through one side of the protector.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the improved protector comprises a crown or dome formed Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 21, 1911.

of a frame having a base ring 10 carrying a plurality of arcuate rods 11 spaced from one another and extending up to a connecting ring 12.
lVitbin the crown or dome is disposed a support or head engaging member of a flexible nature, the saine preferably comprising a plurality of crossed strips 13 stitched together at their crossed central portions and having' their ends stitched or otherwise suitably attached to the sides of the base ring l0. The flexible strips 13 are loose within the base ring 10 so as to project up into the dome or crown when the strips rest upon the head to support the ring. The supporting strips merge at their outer ends into connecting strips 14 depending from the sides of the base ring 10 and supporting in vertical spaced relation a plurality of rlngs 15. The lowermost or bottom ring 15 is slightly reduced in size for enga ement beneath the chin, and carries a p uralityi. of spirally dispo-sed arms 16 of a spring nature, the same extending in one direction and supporting upon their lower ends a turned-over binding strip 17 roviding a channel about the lower end of t 1e protector for the reception of a draw-string 18. The draw string 1S is employed in contracting the lower end of the protector about the neck of the wearer in order to exclude insects and the like. The lower extremities of the connecting strips 14 are attached to the sides of the bottom ring 15 and are suitably secured to the intermediate rings 15 for holding the same in position.
A flexible covering 19 of netting of small lnesh is disposed over the crown and extends down about the rings 15, and has its lower end secured to the binding strip 17 for the purpose of entirely closing the protector. The covering 19 is attached to the crown and to the flexible connecting strips and rings so that when the protector is folded the cover will collapse and lie in between the rings 15.
In the application of the improved protector the head is inserted up through the rings 15, the flexible support engagin against the top of the head and being space down from the crown. The rings 15 fall about the head and are of such size as to space the covering 19 out from the head to hold oft' the insects coming against the protector.
Having thus described thv invention, i tim arms together, :1nd moans for gathering 10 what is claimed is: and holdin@ Said strip.
A hond protootor comprising :L frzmlo, n i In testimony whvreof, I ntix my signacovering mounted thereon, n ring forming turc in prosonco of two witnesses. the loworportion of the trame, spirziily dis- EDGAR A. ,ALZ. l!" posed resillent arms attached ut their outer ends to the said ring, said covering extend- Witnesses: ing along the outer Sides of said arms, a JOHN A.
