Description
G. W. ROBERTS. PLANT PROTECTOR. APPLICATION FILED MAY 29. 1914.
, Patented Jul 6, 1915.
;; 7 2 E i ammo/13 PLANOO GEORGE W. ROBERTS, OF VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI.
PLANT-PROTECTOR.
To all whom itmdy concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vicksburg, in the county of Warren and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plant-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plant protectors of that class comprising a hood orcover and means whereby the same may be supported above a plant for the purpose of protecting the same against frost.
One object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive conical protector made of paper or cardboard and having av support formed with a reinforcing band.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the conical hood and the supporting member and the manner of assembling the same.
WVit'h these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts". which will be hereinafter fully described I and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that-no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved plant protector applied in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showingthe supporting member detached. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken ion the line 3"3 in Fig. 1. 1
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
A conical hood 15 made of paper, light cardboard or other suitable material, has overlapping edges 16, 17 secured together by means of wire clips 18, which latter also serve to secure the cone on a supporting member consisting of a rod or wire 20, the same being bent to form at the upper end thereof a loop 22 Copies of this patent may be obtained for. five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

ends to form an angularly disposed 10015 or ring 25, said ring being disposedlto-sun,
v theapex of said hood to reinforce thesa'me.
round the conical hood some distance below It will. be seen thatthe loop orflring 25eis disposed angularly with respect to the body of the supporting member or wire 20in such fashion that when the supporting member is applied to the conical hood, the 'ring25 will lie in a plane substantially at right angles to the axis of'said hood. Fastenlng members, such asclips 27, are also usedtofcon 1 nect the ring 25' directly jwi ththe bodyof the hood. p V The improved protector may be'readily may be driven into, the ground, being inof theplant that isto be protected, and the supporting member being insertedinto the i ground obliquely in an outward direction from the root ofthe plant which, therefore, will not be liable to be injured. The pro tectors maybe applied atsigns of approachis claimed as new, is I A plant protector comprising a conical hood formed of sheet material and having overlapping edges, in combination ;with a supporting member mounted exteriorly on said hood along the line of the overlapping portions, said supporting member consisting of awire provided at itsupper end with a ring constituting a'handle and formed intermediate the ends larly disposed loop surrounding the hood below the apex thereof, fastening'members thereof with an anguand may be quickly whereby'the overlapped-edges of the sheet material forming the hood are secured togetherand upon the supporting member,
and-other fastening members connecting the ringwith the material of the hood.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
