(NO Model.)
15151113551. PLANT PROTECTOR.
No. 505,554. Patented Sept. 19, 1893. I
INVENTOH {Ego/z Crarzk'sa'.
A TTOHNE VS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GARBESI, OF MOUNDSVILLE, WEST VIRGINIA.
PLANT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 505,354, dated September 19, 1893.
Application filed April 4, 1893. Serial No. 468,979. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOSEPH GARBESI, residing at Moundsville, in the county of Marshall and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented certainnewand useful Improvements in Plant- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to plant protectors and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out board, and the like, with overlapping edges or ear portions, which are either secured to the body by cement, or by some suitably constructed fastening devices. Such protectors also usually have fastening or anchoring means at their lower ends, whereby they are firmly set and held to the ground to prevent being blown over or away.
Protectors constructed in substantially the manner stated, are expensive, require too much care in their adjustment, and soon become useless. To avoid these objections, and to provide a device which will be of special advantage for the purpose desired, which will serve to protect both large and small plants from sudden changes of temperature, and which can be quickly set in place and require no special anchoring means, is the main object of my invention.
It has also for its object to provide a protector formed of light paper, so lapped, folded and cemented, as to prevent the same from coming apart and losing its shape from dampness or rain and thereby adapt it for use, for a considerable length of time.
My improved protector comprises a body portion A, preferably conical in shape as shown, it being manifest however that the same may be pyramidical as shown in Fig. 4 or have a cylindrical body witha conical top as shown in Fig. 5, the conical shape being preferred owing to its cheapness of construction.
The body A is formed of a thin sheet of paste board folded twice upon itself as shown at a, a in Fig. 3, its outer end a stopping at a point over the inner edge a The several layers of. the board are joined by a water proof cement B, arranged over the entire contact portions of the board, whereby a solid body is formed. By thus forming the body it is manifest that the usual overlapping or fastening portion of the body is dispensed with, thereby creating a saving of material, and as the ends do not join directly, moisture cannot affect the same and cause them to separate. Furthermore by folding the paper as stated to form a body of several layers continuously joined by water proof cement, a rigid body partially impervious to moisture is provided. As a means for rendering such body entirely Water and frost proof, the same has on its inside and outside, a coating of coal tar, as indicated by C Fig. 2, such coating also serving to prevent insects from attacking the plants.
To make'it easy to pack the protectors one inside the other, and prevent the several members sticking together, and also to add weight to such body, the outer face thereof has a coating of sand as at D. This coating not alone makes it easy to handle the protectors, but adds suificient additional weight to hold them to their set positions, and thereby dispenses with the necessity of providing prongs or other anchoring means.
The body A has light openings F in its sides which are covered with mica as shown.
From the foregoing it is manifestthat my improved devices can be constructed at a minimum cost and in different sizes to suit different kinds of plants. They can be compactly packed and when taken to the field require no adjustment, more, than setting them over the ICG planted, the lower ends can be cut out without danger of injuring the roots.
It will be noticedin myimproved protector that the use of metal loops and fastening devices is entirely dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a plant protector, comprising a body formed of paper, said body having a coal tar or analogous coating on its inner and outer faces and an additional coating of sand held on the tar coating on the outer face all substantially as shown and for the purposedescribed.
face all substantially as and for the purpose 25 set forth.
