Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1915.
Application filed December 20, 1912. Serial No. 737,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE H. DoNAHoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pepla, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pepla, the object in view being to provide a device of the class described which is applicable to any ordinary shirt-waist, whether the same opens in the front or in the back, the peplum embodying a construction which adapts it to be readily applied around the shirt waist.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a waist before the peplum is applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detachable plan view of the peplum. Fig. 3 is a front view of the waist, showing the peplum applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the same.
The peplum contemplated in this invention is cut out of any suitable textile material, and comprises a body 1 in the form of a sector of a circle. The size of the body of the peplum is of course increased or diminished in the primary cutting operation, in accordance with the waist measure, the peplum extending entirely around the waist and serving in effect as a skirt for the bottom of the waist below the belt line.
Secured along the shorter inner edge of the body 1 is a waist band 2, the two members 1 and 2 being stitched together. The
waist band 2 is also extended at one or both ends beyond the corresponding ends of the body 1, so that when the peplum is applied to the waist, said projecting ends will overlap each other, enabling them to be fastened. together in any convenient manner.
It will be understood that before permanently fastening the peplum in place the waist is gathered suitably, and thereafter the peplum serves to hold the gathered portion of the waist securely. The peplum constructed and applied as shown and described, is self-supporting and furthermore the extremities of the waist band may overlap without effecting the overlap of the major portion of the peplum.
What is claimed is:
As an article of manufacture, a peplum comprising a body or main section consisting of a portion of an annular shaped strip of fabric, a waist band consisting of a narrower strip secured to and extending along the inner margin of said body and having the extremities thereof extended beyond the corresponding extremities of the body so to overlap each other without effecting an overlap of the extremities of the main body section, and complemental fasteners on the projecting extremities of said waist band, such fasteners forming the sole securing means whereby the device as a whole is selfsupporting and adapted to surround, gather in and confine the lower margin of a shirt waist.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
